Going to Disney w/o film?

I spent over a month trying to decide between the S30/G2. Finally went for the S30 mainly due to its portability. S40 quickly fell out of my list as I really did not need 4MP. G2 is by no means a brick but when you compare them side by side its a noticeable difference. Can't comment on picture quality as the camera is waiting for me at home but from the posts I've seen, the pictures are much better than from my S10 in terms of sharpness and color.(did not realize the shortcommings of my S10 until looking at some of these shots) Taking a G2 to Disney is sort of an overkill IMO. If you want an everyday camera go for the S30. Go for the S40 only if you absolutely need the 4MP.
I still haven't let go of my Maxxum 7 and made the digital plunge.
I'm taking the family to Disney World in a few weeks and figure
this might be a good excuse. Trying to choose between an S40 and
G2. I know these two have been debated a lot but my two questions
are:

1. Will the smaller size of the S40 make up for the slower lens.

2. The kids are only little once. Will I regret the loss of
quality if I leave my film at home?

I was in the same boat as you - I couldn't decide between the S30 and the G2. I come from an SLR background and am used to toting around a bunch of stuff. But then I went to Circuit City and when I held the S30 in my hands, I couldn't BELIEVE how light it was!! I wasn't sure what to do after that. Finally, I opted for the G2. One reason is I am hoping to make the switch from film to digital - for the most part. And I really wanted something that would give me great pictures. Carrying around the G2 is a lot easier than carrying around my Pentax. Though heavier than some digicams it's still pretty light when you're used to an SLR. BUT, really, now that I have the G2 in my hands, I have to say that the flip out LCD is invaluable!! I cannot emphasize that enough! You begin to wonder how you ever lived without it! Low to the gound or overhead shots are great!!! So is flipping it around to take self portraits or family portraits with you actually in the picture!!!! I don't know if I'll ever be able to own any camera without this feature again - I'm spoiled now. To me, portability is nothing compared to what you can do with the ease of the flip out LCD. Just my opinion. If you get a chance, stop by a camera store and hold both of them in your hands. Take pictures at all different angles - that will really help you decide how well the camera will work for you! That's what I did and I am very happy with my decision.

Hope that helps!

Barry,

I hope you have a great time at WDW. We'll be going down the week
after you. I've already got a laptop, although I wish I could
leave it at home since this is supposed to be a vacation!

I'm still torn between the small size of the S30 and the flash
capability and faster lens of the G2.

I don't think you can go wrong either way, I have a neighbor that just bought the S30, I've had a little time with it, it is nice. I went and bought a camera case that attaches to a belt at lunch yesterday (in preperation for the trip), and when I got home i found my G2 was too snug of a fit for it...

If it were me, and I wasn't going to buy an external flash, I would go S30. The flip out lens of the G2 is a great feature, but the small size of the S30 is also nice. That said, I'm glad I went G2, but I've been tempted to buy an S30 also, but I'm not going to buy two cameras of the same generation.

Funny comment regarding the laptop. I think the main reason I don't want to buy a laptop is I would likely end up checking email (work) while on vacation.

Have fun,
Barry
