the dark background comes naturally, try setting the cam to F.11 and the flash on the lowest power with diffuser, and as long as the background is far enough away from the flower it comes out dark, but make sure the background is in the shade or generally darker than the subject, my background was just the grass or a dark green bush that was shaded.

--Mark, those are excellent shots. The blue one is most striking for
me, very sharp probably due to f/11.
How do you succeed to have the background so dark? By shading the
background?
