Question on the shadows while using pop up flash with a D80

I have noticed that sometimes when taking pictures with my d80 and my Tamron 17-50 lens, I get a shadow using the pop up flash. I don't seem to get it with my SB-600 mounted. I am using the lens hood, is this a technique problem or is the pop up just not powerful enough is some situations. I had the camera in P mode with the ISO set to 400. Below is an example of my problem.

ahh Thank you, that makes perfect sense, I new it had to be something simple!! I will have to remember to remove the hood for certain situations.

Since I use the 18-35 zoom the most that was a major problem, unless I removed the lens hood. With my SB-400, it rarely (if ever) happens.
 
I'm pretty sure it's not your hood but most likely your hand on the lens holding the camera...Are you holding the camera both by the shutter button side and the lens?
 
This is correct, and it can also happen when using a long lens near the subject.

D80 ~ 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ~ 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 VR ~ 50mm f/1.4 ~ SB-26 ~ :)
 
I admittedly don't have the steadiest hand, but I usually put my hand under the lens, I could be wrong but I don't think its my hand on the top of the lens.

remove lens hoods to prevent shadows (built in flash) - (D80 manual)

I will do some tests with my "normal" hand placement and with the lens hood on and off see when i am duplicating it. I usually always use my SB-600 but sometimes with the kids you don't have time to mount it before missing the shot. They may be small but they are fast!!!

I have had some pictures just recently with the same shadow. After removing the lens hood the shadow went away. I have also noticed it when my lens is extended all the way at 200mm at times.

I have the SB-600 and think it is a much better choice than the pop up lens all the way around. No shadows, not a flashy picture due to bouncing the flash and the pictures just look better.
