Hi yáll.

Bought a 200 mm 2.8 prime two days ago to use with my 5D.
I didn't want a 70-200 zoom because of weight and color (conspicuousnes).
Apart from that the prime is very sharp and nicely priced.

Here are some shots I did in the streets of Amsterdam yesterday.

Bye,

Nice run of shots. What aperture did you use ? I would have expected more background blur if you were opened up, but still very nice shots.

I have a 70-200f4, and love to use it for street shots, but prefer to get closer with my 85 1.8 and open it up

thanks for sharing

Hi Paul,

You can check the exifs over here:

I also have the 85mm f/1.8 but my favourite street lens must be
the 16-35mm f/2.8 L for getting real close.

It makes a nice combo with the 200L depending on the situation.

DOF with the 200 gets more shallow when getting closer to the subject.
Here is another from yesterday:

Thank you for your comments

Bye,

I spent several days in Amsterdam years ago and it seems that the atmosphere and the variety of individuals hasn't changed. It's truly a beautiful city. You captured some great character studies. Well done!

not bad. I personally think 200 is too long for street photography, if its isolating a person in a closeup its different. Its just too disconnected, it feels too paparazii for me. This is where wide lenses work great, draw you into their world.

Hello Pawel,

In general I agree with you.
I usually do my thing with the 16-35mm 2.8 L.

Like you said, it turns out a completely different kind of pictures than the 200mm.

It is nice though to have both lenses at hand for different situations or mood.

Bye,

Excellent captures of some really interesting people on the street.
You found some real characters.

Hi Juli !

Finding real characters in the streets of Amsterdam is eassier than you think.
(what did you think of the lady in Pink ?)

Bye,

how grandmothers want to dress as if they were teenagers. Or is it
a guy in drag? Regardless, it was a hoot.
It wasn't a guy in drag Juli ; it was indeed a woman.

If it hadn't been for the matching bike and bike-bag, one just might think she was heading for a party...but I do not think she was.

Anyway, it is never too late to enjoy a happy childhood, no?

Bye,

scary looking dude !

Try 50mm or 35mm for, street, pictures will be better, and less
weight to carry.
No selfportrait I am afraid, I'm much uglier !

I tried a 35mm in the shop allready, but was taken aback by the very strong vigneting wide open.
I have a 50mm but consider it too long/short.

I do have an 16-35 2.8 L for
the streets.

Bye,

No, I have never been there and look forward to some day. They are famous for their chocolates, beer, and tulips. Anything particular that I need to know? I live in the USA and find the people here generally polite and smiling. So my first impression on these wonderful street candid photos was: "How come these people are so serious and grim?"

Peter: He did not appreciate you taking his picture and at of his girl friend. Looking at the size of his arms, I am surprised that you are still alive and still be able to reply my thread. :-)
