I have a G2 and have been mulling over the thought of a DSLR (D60) but, even though I didn't think much of it when I bought the G2, I now don't know if I can really get along without the swivel LCD. I am doing Macro and will be using a maneuvable tripod where that swivel LCD is invaluable without getting on my stomach to see the viewfinder or LCD on a D60 - AND which allows me to use the remote while seeeing the image.

Just curious -is it a mechanical reason or purely an aesthetic reason?--Regards,

This comes up from time to time. A simple search of "swivel LCD" on this forum results in.......

Hi Joe, Do a search on LCD preview.
It is both mechanical and electrical.
The D30/60 uses a mirror cause it is a real SLR and the CMOS sensor.
Here is a post Phil made awhile back on the electronic reason.

physical reason:

Digital SLR's are TTL - they do not leave the CCD/CMOS on to preview the image. So if you have the capacity to look into the viewfinder, then by simply pulling your face away - gives you direct view to the LCD.

Also, DSLR's are alot heavier and a swivel would get knocked off in a minute while toting around some heavier lenses - I know this - I have a G1 as well as a 1D with 200/1.8 - 10lb combo!

To get swivel, do a remote capture to a laptop screen...

It is simply and clearly an SLR ther has never been a film SLR which had such a feature as the whole point is the view through the lens.

There is an Angle Finder on the SLR's that serves this purpose.
Do you mean that there is an optional angle viewfinder attachment
for the D60? Please clarify. Thanks, Chieh!
There is an optional Angle Finder C for the EOS line of cameras. Whether it works with D60 or not, I don't know. But it either works natively with the camera or with an adapter. On EOS cameras that doesn't work with the the Angle Finder C, there is another angle finder that works with it.

Sorry, I made a mistake. The angel finder for D30 is Angle Finder B. Angle Finder C is for some other Canon cameras. I can't remember which ones. You'll have to do some research to find the right one for your camera.

this is materially impossible on a SLR, so why don't you use your brain and your gear together?

with your brain, think of a square little mirror. you know, the kind of mirror your girlfriend carries in her purse... fix it to the back with some adhesive tape, this will give you a (reversed) view from above the camera. you could buy a double-sided one, with normal and magnified views on each side!
bye-bye 1,8 inch monitor :)

and how do you get a view from above if there's no preview available? use the gear, for god's sake: this is DIGITAL, shoot as many shots as needed, then when you got the right picture, delete all the test pictures! this is not a live preview, this will sure be power consuming, but have you noticed how power consuming the live preview on a G2 is?

buy a second battery, and everything's fine :)
be creative...

Hi Chieh:
You were correct the first time, it should be an angle finder "C".

Without live preview, the LCD is used to review images - for that, your wrists work best.
