1st question pertains to the Depth pop-up menu. Can someone tell me what this is for and when would I need 16 Bits/Channel vs. 8 bits/Channel.

My Photoshop CS2 for digital photographers by Scott Kelby does not explain this feature in depth (no pun intended)

2nd question: Every time I open up a raw file in CS2, on the upper right hand side of the photo there is a yellow triangular exclamation mark for a few seconds. What is this warning me of?

understanding bit depth is not difficult, but does take some explanation, so i'll refer you to:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/bit-depth.shtml

in a nutshell, a 16bit image has more information in it.

if you need to send 16 bit files to a magazine or printers, you would have to save your image in a file format that supports 16bit - such as a TIFF or PSD

if you print jpegs, or display jpegs on the web, this format only supports 8bit

inside of photoshop, some filters and manipulation is also not supported when using 16bit files - so if you ever needed to run a filter that can only run using 8bit files, you'd need to convert

that there are colours outside of the colour space

EDIT - sorry this link isn't the one i was thinking of, this is nothing to do with colour spaces!

the next one is though...

and then you may also find useful for understanding the colour options:

The yellow exclamation mark tells you that the colours are out of the range of the colour space you are currently in.

If you use "web only" colours, pretty much everything is out of range.

sRGB can cope with a wider range of colours, and Adobe colourspace even more colours.

From adobe faq at the RAW forum....

Q: Whenever I open an image in Adobe Camera Raw a small explanation mark within a yellow triangle appears in the upper right hand corner of the image.

A: This symbol indicates that a high quality preview is being generated by Adobe Camera Raw. It should disappear after a couple of seconds.
