GX100 SD/SDHC # of Blinks of Auto Focus / Flash Lamp When Writing Raw File

Stan, it would be really interesting to test your camera with an ultra fast card like 2GB Sandisk Extreme III, which is currently the fastest card for GX100. Did you try to measure the time required for RAW writing (while the camera is locked)? GX100 blinks seems to be one blink = 0.5 sec. Does the same apply for your GRD?
So 17 blinks on a GRD is not to shabby! ? after all.

I have the latest firmware and i bought it only a couple of months
back, so i guess it's a later model.

Come GRD'ers I know some of you have a GRD too (Tom where are you?)

lets try and get some more info for the GRD thread

cheers
sorry if i'm 'flogging a dead horse' as the saying goes...

Pavel, yes it would be, if anyone wants to send me one i'll gladly test it ; )

Yes, i tested this too with the stopwatch on my mobile phone (pretty good, i've never used it before!) each time i got within a fraction of half a second, so when you figure in the human factor of me pressing the buttons etc. i'd say half a second per blink is about as close as I could get it.

NOTE: there is a slight pause from when i press the shutter to when the blinks begin. I timed this and it seems to be approx. 1 second.

Is this the case with the GX100 also? I assume it would be.

So we should add one second to times to allow for this pause. Having said that the blink system is uniform so it's still a great way to test card performance.

cheers
and come GRD owners...

I also purchased the Transcend 2GB 150x card (Non-SDHC). I've repeated the test a couple times now, and I am consistently getting 9 blinks (1 less than the same card by another user). So it looks like there's a little bit of variability....

You are welcome Bjorn! The same apply for your great LX2/GX100
comparisons!
I certainly had fun shooting those comparison photos.
From the constantly growing list of cards, it appears to me that the
large capacity cards are always a bit slower. It looks as if the
camera "scans" the entire card before writing and in case of larger
capacities it can probably take some time. So at the moment, I would
say that the speed of card is important, but the size matters as
well. Smaller ultrafast card will be probably always faster than big
ultrafast card.
My latest addition, a Kingston 8GB Class 6 SDHC card, seems to support your conclusions. It takes 13 blinks to finish writing a 10M RAW + Fine JPEG to the card. So it's slightly slower than the 2GB Sandisk Ultra II which takes 11 blinks. Not really a significant difference, especially considering the card's vast capacity. I generally only shoot RAW for difficult lighting or long, tripod-mounted exposures anyway. The other times, recording JPEGs is quick and you can take a following picture even before the first image is written to the card. For most things JPEGs with all the image parameters set to -2 are sufficient for my purposes.

Do you shoot a lot of RAW?

Also, do you have a feel for how many blinks there are to the second?

Cheers, Björn

Thanks Pavel.

I am beginning to wonder whether all our GX100's record at the same speed, or blink at the same speed. Or whether the other factors, like the amount of information in the companion JPEG, also influence write speed. It just seems odd that my 8GB Kingston class 6 card is slower than someone else's 8GB Kingston class 4 card.

13 blinks for 8GB card is not that bad. Thanks for test! But I would still prefer 2 smaller cards than one big..just in case one card goes to hell you always have another ;) What's really interesting, that your Class 6 card is a bit slower than another Kingston 8GB SDHC but this time Class 4? Like if there would be no difference between Class 4 & 6?

This is exactly my scenario of GX100 use. Less processed JPEG for ISO 80-200 and RAW for higher ISO values. But I like grainy low ISO shots so maybe I would use RAW all the time? ;)
Do you shoot a lot of RAW?
At the moment no. I'm currently using E400, where the RAW file takes over 20MB and the JPEG is good enough for ISO 100-800. And with prime 50/1.4 I'm usually not forced to go over ISO640 ;)

But I'm probably in the same situation like you were with Sony Alpha ;) The E400 produces excellent images, especially with old school prime lenses (see my not so often updated pbase if you wish http://www.pbase.com/odklizec ). I bought it mainly because of it's small size and I was stupid enough to sell my old good GX8. But I'm already tired from carrying E400. It's still too big to be carried everywhere with me. So I'm on the same way as you, to sell it or trade it for GX100/GRD ;) Many people would say that I'm mad. But I like the grainy look of GRD images and the versatility of GX100. And they both can be carried in my pockets, while the E400 (with or without second lens) takes entire bag. And there are days when you simply cannot carry another bag with you ;) So I see myself with GX100 or GRD in a near future ;)
Also, do you have a feel for how many blinks there are to the second?
People says that 1blink is 0.5 sec. I tend to believe these figures.

BTW, hope you enjoyed your trip over Slovakia? ;)

Cheers,
Pavel

Not necessarily. I think that GX100 JPEGs have quite a nice grain as well. Even at higher ISOs, and especially in black and white, they have an attractive grittiness. Of course it depends somewhat on your subject and the specific lighting.

I had to ask myself: do I really "need" the improved image quality of a DSLR enough to carry around such a heavy and obtrusive camera. My answer was not enough.

Furthermore, I didn't find the Sony Alpha a particularly inspiring camera, or I might have kept it for use closer to home. In my opinion, the interface was quite old fashioned and didn't fully exploit the potential of the digital medium or age.

So I sold the Alpha again. Many did consider me mad. But to be without a capable compact, never!

Sounds reasonable

I sure did. I loved the countryside and the people were so welcoming and friendly. It got out that I really liked the home made klobása (spelling?), so I got given quite a bit to take home.

Good to hear that! I just saw some RAW and JPEG shots at ISO 100 and the RAW has definitely more noise, which I actually like ;) I asked Ricoh to add NR switch OFF to any next GX100 update but you know, I got the usual predefined answer ;) It seems they are not keen to add any new feature to GX100 as they did in case of GRD.

Yes, you got the spelling of "Klobása" right. It's very unhealthy but very delicious food (if prepared properly) ;) I also saw in your gallery you tried the Slovak national food "halusky with bryndza"? Did you like them? Many people don't like the strong smell and taste of bryndza cheese. But once you get used to it, you will don't want another variation of Halusky! Of course, it depends of how well are the Halusky prepared. Not so long ago me, my fiance and couple of friends from UK visited a restaurant under a very nice castle. But the halusky they prepared were totally awful. So when we returned home, we have no other option than to make our own version.

Well, I finally got my hands on a Panasonic SDHC Class 6 card of 4 Gb.

I have owned a GRD from the day it has been released and the Panasonic cards were always very fast (and recommended by the German service dept. I have once contacted).

So I wanted to have one for the GX100 too

Anyway, with the GX100 it blinks 8 times (sometimes it blinks 9 times).

Cool! It would be interesting to see if the 2GB version wouldn't be even a bit faster? From the current list of cards is clearly visible that the larger cards (SDHC) are usually slower.

BTW, the corresponding JPEG was set to Fine, Standard or N640? If Fine or Standard, could you please try also the N640? Thank you!
