I was just told by a Ritz Camera representative that the cameras are shipping from the factory this week BUT NOT TO THE DEALERS :-( They are first going to a warehouse for final quality assurance testing. They are scheduled to start going to dealers in the middle of next month. It will be interesting to see if they wait to send big batches or send small shipments as they are verified. Anyway, I thought this was interesting because it probably explains the conflicting info on shipping dates.

Huh?

Final QA? What could they possibly be assurring? That the cameras survived the trip? That the boxes are over their jet lag? Seems wierd to me.

That seems really odd, since I talked to Canon this morning, and "Bill" (the guy I spoke to) told me that the D60s are now shipping and should be in stores at the end of this month or at least by April 1st.

I hate Ritz anyway, no one ever knows anything about what they are selling unless it's a point-and-shoot, and even then, they basically only know what the box says. Unfortunately, from what I've heard, Ritz is the largest camera store in the USA. They bought out Wolf Camera and the Camera Shop--any more of these stores that you see are owned by Ritz. I'm glad there are a few local "REAL" photography stores around here (Baltimore) like Service Photo and Cooper's.

Hell, maybe they're right, but that doesn't explain why the guy from Canon told me that dealers should have it on April 1st.

Beth,

I would take those comments with a grain of salt. My experience with most sales people is that if they don't know they make one up. Steve

I wonder what impact this strategy of "QA testing" of units for the dealers will have on those that ordered direct from Ritz's mail order biz over the internet? I am somwhere around #60 on the Ritz list and will be pretty disappointed if I must wait 3 or 4 more weeks to get the unit flushed through the "QA" process while it appears other units will be delivered this week through other distributors. Yeah I hate sales guys that don't know jack. Tried to get bearings for a 9" Ford rear end (ford galaxie) and the guy was like "Sorry it's not in the computer". To contrast that when I was stationed in Florida the guy at the auto store looked out the store window and was like "Headlights? Sure hang on" and grabbed two headlights that fit perfect.

About photography though, there was one guy I talked to at Pen Camera in Springfield (VA), who really knew his stuff. We must have talked shop for about an hour; about the D60, and the D100. Too bad I didn't get his name. A little off subject but you know any places around here (MD, VA, DC) that rent out camera lenses?

Tim,

You can rent most of the stuff, including D1X, from a Penn Camera store in DC.
