The good and the bad. None of the suggested fixes worked so I sent my 990 to Nikon Repair. They received it on a Saturday and I got it back the following Friday. They replaced the shutter release, cleaned and adjusted. etc. 150 bucks plus S&H. American express may pay. I expected that the picture sequence numbers would be where I left off, 2600 or so, or back to zero. For some reason they now began at 9645. Does anyone know if I can resume my original count and how to do it? Thanks.--Maurice

I did this once on my 950 coolpix, you have to take a .jpg file on your pc, rename it to the number sequence you want and then resave the file to your compact flash card. Then take another picture with the camera, the camera should start the sequence with the next number that you had after the renamed file.

Make sense ??

Thanks.--Mike in Minneapolis

I don't own a digital camera yet, so I don't know if there is a more direct route...

I remember reading that if you put a compact flash card that has pictures on it in a camera that is set to zero that the camera will start counting from the highest number on the card.... so try putting the highest numbered picture on the flash card and see if that helps..

Just out of concern have you checked the serial number to see if you got the same camera back. It seems strange that the serial numbers would change that much.

Thanks Michael & Ken. but it doesn't seem to work on the 990. That was a good thought MDTROUT, but I just checked and the camera number is correct. It is mysterious, why 9645 and not zero? Maybe someone else has the answers.
