I stumbled across a bridal show sponsored by a couple of the local (Central Taiwan) wedding studios, and arranged permission to shoot the event. I think the thing I'll miss most about this place when I return to the home planet is the access I get as a foreigner. It's a real door-opener (the E doesn't hurt, either), and I've been invited to shoot on TV location sets, candidates trucks during mobile election rallys, and even up to people's rooftops for those hard-to-get angles. But now I'm digressing.

The shoot was in a banquet hall on the top floor of a department store, starting at 7pm. Lights were a bunch of floods with gels and a big spot with gels set up at the end of a hallway outside. I set up my E-10 with Metz 54 and Lumiquest 80/20 (silver insert). Couldn't decide on a WB (hack, hack), so I went with incandescent. Mistake. Skin tones were pretty green-blue, but they color adjusted pretty well. I went for a look that emphasized the spotlight in the processing, and I think they're okay. I ran into full buffers a couple of times, and had some inexplicable oofs (seemed to come in bunches as the batteries went flat - didn't want to break to change them as the action was pretty constant), but I'm pretty happy with the way the camera handled the situation. Shot about 150 images in 45 minutes, and the models and managers of the studios were so happy to see them on the little LCD afterwards that they asked me to come back for the afternoon show the next day. This time I set WB to 4700K (kind of a compromise between the hotlights and flash), and the unprocessed files look much better. Haven't finished putting them all up, but there are 30some at http://www.pbase.com/irae/brideshow

Erik Ehudin,

Luscious indeed! Yeah the E-XX does open doors doesn't it! ;-) Great job without even considering the circumstances. Some very good images. You set the WB to other then auto while using flash? I notice that it is not an FL40, is that the recommended setting for the Metz? What's the cycle time on the Metz anyway - faster then you can flush a buffer? What was the res and compression setting? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Les.

I actually never use auto WB anymore, as the results are so mixed depending on the availability of white in the scene. Having so many images to rework, at least they're all consistantly off so I can process them more or less the same way. The color temp of the Metz is 5600K, but I just wasn't sure, since I set it to auto TTL, how much the hotlights would effect the color. Not much, as it turns out. I used a set of GP 1800 NiMH in the flash, and it cycled as fast as I shot (2 - 6 per minute, I'm a plodder). Shot at 2.7 JPEG and max res, as I wanted to be sure to have enough memory. One of these days I'm going to dive into RAW, but I'm saving it for a time when I need convincing that the camera isn't ready to be replaced (like when I'm 50).
Appreciate your comments!

Nice work. I think you were in a sweet spot as far as lighting. Nice contrasts. I wish the ceiling has less distractions, but your comps are excellent. I particularly enjoy this one:

For your WB woes, you may want to try RAW format. It won't help your buffer full issues at all, but you'll notice a substancial quality difference - as well as gain the ability to alter the WB after the shot without any color information loss.

Good luck at the next one.--Regards,Joe H.---------------------------------------www.biggerboatstudios.com

Thanks, Joe. Once I decide on the keepers, I'm going to do some work on the backgrounds, but with 300+ to sort through I'm just trying to get them up while they're fresh. I keep procrastinating the jump to RAW shooting, as my limited CF capacity and ancient computer just won't keep up. Soon, though. That favorite of yours is one I just worked up between my first post and yours (200 to go...). Thanks for the feedback!

Erik:

Beautiful work! I like the mood you've set with the overall tonality of these images. Granted, the models are lovely; however, you've managed to make them appear to be more so with your expertise.

Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thanks, Eileen.

Actually, I've found (IMVLE) that a good model is well over half the game. I'm glad you like the look, as I've really had to work a bit to get presentable images out of what I shot. The afternoon numbers are coming up, and they've got a more daytime tone.
Much appreciated!

Hi Erik,

Excellent work, I'm really impressed !

I do love the B/W converted images and I think you could achieve some great results by converting some of the other pics to B/W.

Keep up the good work !

Cheers

Really nice gallery. You got some really good shots. Hope more are on the way.

Hi Erik,

Outstanding. Can't wait to see them all. I like best some of the shots where you caught the model smiling. (There's a really good one on page 3 of your gallery, for example.)

Good work on tweaking WB......those are difficult lighting conditions you were working in.

Best wishes,

David-- http://www.mongoosephoto.com

Thanks, Jens.

I love the B/W, too, but it doesn't fly too well here in Taiwan. The reaction from non-photographers is akin to "What, couldn't afford color?". I will be going back and reworking the keepers once I get everything up. I'm hoping to impress the studio managers with a burst of speed, though, so I'm sticking to colors and sharpening for now.

Thanks, Trent.

I've still got half of the first day and all of the second to wade through. I'll post a notice when I get more up. Appreciate you taking the time to look!

Thanks, David.

Well... you know those enigmatic asian ladies - tough to catch them smiling (although one of them gave me some real brilliant ones... already have a Bride, though). I was too busy tapping the AF and watching the buffer to pay much attention to who was who at the time, but looking over the images now I can see different personalities emerging in the models. It must be great to work with someone consistently. I'll post a notice when more are up.
Regards,
Erik

Dang! Well, that finishes the first shoot. Now to start working on the pics from Sunday. Prolly gonna need a good divorce lawyer before I'm through (sorry, Honey). I'd appreciate a heads-up if you notice any that need tweaking / removing. Judgement / eyes get strained when working with so many images. Thanks!

700 hits on my page since I put up this thread. :-) This is my attempt to impress the managers at the two studios that put on the show a) with the quality of digital, and b) with the quality and speed of my workflow (ahem). I'll be dropping a CD of proofs and an 8X10 or two over there as soon as I'm all done (tomorrow, if I can somehow cajole my own Bride into having another late night). Think it'll work? See any clunkers on the page? Would I be better off just putting the best 10 shots on the CD? My rationalle is that I want them to see that I got a high percentage of usable stuff during the 45 minute show, but I'd be interested in hearing what you think.
Thanks!
