GX100 SD/SDHC # of Blinks of Auto Focus / Flash Lamp When Writing Raw File

Just want to make sure that the following is not a typo.

"8GB Transcend SDHC class 2" and it is different from the one that I'm thinking of getting which is stated as class 6.

btw, does anybody have any experience about Ridata 8g SDHC class 2 card?

Interesting to see that the SDHC cards seem to be as slow as that.

I just tried a Transcend 80x 1GB SD card and got 10 blinks (2 tries).

Ive heard that recently delivered GR-D's are faster at writing RAW files than the early models. Can anyone confirm or disprove that?

I would bet that the slow write to internal memory is because there is not a clean data path available, and that this was an afterthought. Perhaps the same bus is used to read the processed JPG and then again to write it back to internal memory where it will be saved.

Yes I'm pretty sure there's no typo, I will post a photo of it when I get a chance.

2 to 3 blinks Pavel from the smallest jpeg to the largest. The last blink on each is just a flicker. :) I am using the ATP Promax, rated at 9 blinks for 10MB raw.

Thanks for test Jim! So it's about 1.5secs. Pity there is no option to take only the RAW without JPEG. 3secs for RAW would be definitely an improvement! It would be as fast as Leica M8! Not bad for 700USD camera? :D

I've sent another "silly" email about this to Ricoh, but of course, I don't expect anything. Similar option would be great also for GRD users where saving JPEG takes about 2-2.5secs. And as some users reported 8secs or so for RAW, 5-6secs would be also an improvement? I believe that it would turn the GRD RAW into a bit more usable position?

anyone got a Lexar platinum card?

Thanks Jim for an excellent post. Unfortunatly I've got a GRD so I can only admire from a distance.

However - I suppose these write times give a good profile for card performance in general. So it's interesting for everyone.

Also the Panasonic SDHC Class 6 would be worth of try! There are rumors that these cards are currently the fastest cards in town? ;)

I've started the similar thread like this for GRD...
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1013&message=24197236

I thought it would be worth to test the GRD with the latest generation of cards. As I remember, someone reported GRD RAW writing speed around 8 secs? It's much faster than the originally reported 12 or more secs? But measuring the writing speed by number of blinks seems to be more reliable and precise method than using stopwatch. Unfortunately, it looks that no one is interested in such test.

Hi Pavel,

I'll give it a go.

I guess it's not about how fast or how slow in the grd's case, but how well the cards compete.

I really appreciate the efforts you're going to to keep this list up. I'm still using a Sandisk 2GB Ultra II. It takes 11 blinks to save a 10M RAW + fine JPEG. Pretty much what others reported...and quite a bit longer than my previous LX2. But you can't have everything.

My main interest is updating to a 8GB card. But I have time, as it's for a 6 week long trip of SE Asia in January. At the moment there don't seem to be any faster 8GB SDHC cards available, or are there?

Cheers,

Björn

So 17 blinks on a GRD is not to shabby! ? after all.

I have the latest firmware and i bought it only a couple of months back, so i guess it's a later model.

Come GRD'ers I know some of you have a GRD too (Tom where are you?)

lets try and get some more info for the GRD thread

cheers
sorry if i'm 'flogging a dead horse' as the saying goes...

You are welcome Bjorn! The same apply for your great LX2/GX100 comparisons! ;)

From the constantly growing list of cards, it appears to me that the large capacity cards are always a bit slower. It looks as if the camera "scans" the entire card before writing and in case of larger capacities it can probably take some time. So at the moment, I would say that the speed of card is important, but the size matters as well. Smaller ultrafast card will be probably always faster than big ultrafast card.
