1D MkIII Err-01 and lockup problem

Hi

I've had my 1D Mk3 for a month now and tomorrow I am destined for Sweden to shoot a wedding. I thought I'd give the camera a workout and started to get Err-01 (problem communicating between lens and camera body) lockups and 0.0 or 1.0 being reported in the aperture. I cleaned the contacts on all my lenses and body but to no avail. I am also experiencing corrupted RAW and JPEG images on some of my CF cards (never a problem before with the same cards in the 5D).

This happens with all my lenses (25-105mm, 70-200 f/4, 16-35 II) but less so with my 85mm L f/1.2

I had firmware 1.0.8 and just upgraded to 1.1.0 and the problem seemed to go away, but now after about 40 shots it is back again as bad as before.

I can't risk my kit letting me down at an event so maybe have to revert to the 5D spare body....

Anyone's comments on the above or if they have found a way to get around ERR-01 messages would be much appreciated!

Best wishes

Nick

Just to add to this - I bought it from Jacobs in the UK and they said it has to go back to Canon.

The serial number is 519220

My copy of the 1D3 started doing the error 01 thing after one day, it didn't recognize any lens and aperture was 00. It was not intermittent though. The serial number was close to yours, 520xxx. Considering how difficult it is to get a new one, maybe you should just send it to Canon Repair Service. Good luck!

I phoned Canon UK support and they said "that's strange, we have no record of ERR-01 occurances on the 1D Mk 3 model" which must be infuriating for all those folk like me who plainly have! If that is their thinking then it does not bode well for getting the problem fixed...

I pointed out that dpreview and other leading forums were full of ERR 01 lockup references but they said that they cannot take unofficial non-Canon information! surely this is the voice of their customer base and they should listen with full attention - especially if they officially use people like me who pay £3k on a pro camera just to be a beta tester!!!

It's always a very bad sign if you call tech support and get the immediate feeling that they are either uninformed or incompetent. I would send it in for repair anyway. What else can you do?

+++ UPDATE ON ERR 01 +++

I was about to send the body back to Canon and now the problem seems to have gone away...

Is this a common thing where errors can disappear like that?

I will risk using it now with my 5D as backup and let you know how I got on!

Cheers

Nick

Did you just travel with the machine when the problem has arised ??

May be a condensation problem and for that reason has later on disappeared ??

Just speculation

I have not had that problem with mine. If it were me, I'd definitely send it into CPS to be checked out before using it for something important.

I would like to thank Canon UK RCC. There was a loose cable behind the lens mount pins that was the cause.

Apparently the camera stores error codes and they are able to diagnose problems with other kit - and apparently my 200mm lens has a fault too!

I had it happen with a couple of chipless adapters. The solution for me was to remove a little of the bayonet ear that ends up on the upper left when facing the camera (if the mount were a clock there's an ear that ends up tripping a servo at about the 10:30 position). If that's not tripped there's no Err-01.

I wouldn't do that with a genuine lens (but it's much more likely to be an issue with a bad lead on the camera or lens), but if it's happening with adapters that's a solution.
