I would basically have to use the 3:2 mode right?

I've made a bunch of 4x6 prints from normal sized 6m fine but it's kind of annoying to have parts cropped off now.

Also, is there a notable difference between fine and normal?

If you are basically just shooting for 4x6 prints then definately go to the 3:2
mode.

If you dont mind cropping yourself in the computer then shoot regular and just set your crop for a 4x6 and then you can decide how best to frame the print.

How do you set up a 4x6 crop? Or 5x7 crop? I have IrfanView, and Paint.net, and didn't know that feature was available.

I dont have thoseprograms, just assumed all of the real editing programs had the ability. I am just using Adobe album starter and it has as a crop feature

It has these variables

NO RESTRICTION
USE PHOTO RATIO'S
4x6
5x7
8x10
4x6 portrait
5x7 portrait
8x10 portrait

I am sure most programs have something similar. Hopefully someone will have the answer for your programs.

Thanks for the reply, Gus. I just found this posted on the 25th on the Paint.net forum when I went-a-searchin'...

Random guy asks: "First let me say that Paint.NET is mind-bogglingly good. It blows me away.

Having said that, it is astonishing that it does not have a crop feature that includes the common photo cropping aspect ratios (e.g., 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc.)

It is literally -- and I mean "literally" literally -- the first thing I tried to do with the program.

It arguably the most basic task to be performed on a digital photo to prepare it for printing, and un-arguably in the top three.

The workarounds posted in this forum are woefully convoluted and inadequate for what should be a very simple task."

Product lead developer responds: "This is one of the top feature requests and something we're looking to implement in an upcoming update."

I'm going to go out on a limb and say little IrfanView doesn't have it, either. I did read a comment about it being part of Picasa, though. I guess that means I'll be downloading another program for the task... but hey, I'm glad you alerted me to this one-step capability! Now imagine plodding along with your F20 for over six months without knowing about it. ;-)

I am blown away that they dont have it. It is such a necessary thing IMO.

And don't worry I use to take my shots to costco and have them printed without the 4x6 crops, and some would have the top of a head cut off or a hand missing. It was gruesome. I was spending time learning to frame the shot with my camera only to have it chopped up by a machine...
Good luck. I actually have heard great things about Picassa...

Ok, I just found something on IrfanView. Well, 4x6, anyway... it doesn't have 5x7. But just imagine, little nothing IrfanView has at least that, and memory hog, do-it-all Paint.net still doesn't!

Anyway... you open your pic in IrfanView, then go to Edit, then select Create Custom Crop Selection. Take a look at the image I've included to see the dialogue box you'll get. You can then resize to whatever you need to fit (or not fit) within the crop.

Thanks again for alerting me to this, Gus!

Correct. It will be perfect. I uses it all the time. It will prevent tops of heads being cropped off.

Deffinitely

No you will notice NO difference whatsoever. Even printing at large sizes like 8x10"

Save memory card space and cropping. Go the 3:2.........

Cheers Darin

Glad to hear I'm not the only person here to have not figured that out right away. I was going to beg off as just a simple F20 user if someone sneered, lol.

When I still had a film camera, I would sometimes notice feet chopped off, and say to myself "Dang, I thought I composed that shot better." Only when I started checking the prints against the negatives and saw that the feet WERE in the shot, AND found that I could write in "please don't crop images" in the special instructions section of the drop-off envelope and get back un-cropped pics, did I learn any better. But one time I got a roll back with cropped prints, and a long, uncut strip of negatives!

For anyone who doesn't have picasa, I'd say get it as it does offer
4x6 cropping.

There is no visible difference between 3:2 or 6N vs 6F. Don't take my word for it, do the test yourself with your cam mounted on a tripod. I have done this many times and I cannot see the difference at 100% or even 200%. Just make sure you are using the exact same settings/lighting and subject for each comparison. I have an F30 as well and love it.

Best regards,
Mike

PS - I use 3:2 exclusively as it is the same format as 35mm.......something I am used to and have used over the past 45 years. It does me well and affords crop-less 4X6 prints.
