Tired of waiting Nikon to pull the trigger of its next big thing(might be?). I am now planning on switching to 1DMarkIII. Frankly, I've been with my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR for couple of years and was very satisfied with its performance. I would like to get the equivalent lenses after switching to Canon gear.

Anyone here have the same experience? I heard from one of my Canon buddies that the IS is not working as efficiently as the VR on this lens. Also I have questions for the IQ as well.

Definitely need some experienced suggestions.

Thanks.

I used the Nikon 70-200/VR when I shot Nikon and now own the 70-200/2.8 IS. The Canon is a larger lens, it seems, than the Nikon, at least in girth. Image quality is the same to me, though I've not done direct comparisons as it's really pointless. IS works as designed and is equivalent to VR. It's a great lens.

I've shot with both VR vs IS seems about the same. I believe the Nikon comes out a tad sharper than the Canon.

If you don't have a need for f2.8 then the Canon f4 IS L with the latest 4 stop image stabilization might be worth considering. It supposedly has better IQ than all the Canon 70-200s, likely because it's most recent lens.

To be honest IQ between all these lenses is more about hair splitting than dramatic differfences.

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is as good as (if not better than) Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. It is bigger and heavier though. MK3, yeah! It is so good if AF issue is fixed.
