GX100 SD/SDHC # of Blinks of Auto Focus / Flash Lamp When Writing Raw File

I never had any doubt as to the veracity of your findings Tom. The Italians may feel otherwise. :)

Your welcome Murray. I still wish someone would post findings with the Panasonic class 6 card. I saw a recent thread stating something like 8 seconds with the GRD.

Jim-

The Ultra 2's in the link you provided are the 2GB Ultra II. This card actually isn't in the list yet, only the 1GB and 4GB versions.

When you get your cards, make sure you count your blinks and report back!

I just purchased a GX-100 and came accross this thread cause I needed
help on deciding if the Ultra 2's speed would suffice on this cam.
You guys rock!

If any of you need to stack up on ultra 2s heres a good deal. 2 for 1

David,

I mis-read the post and thought that the Ultra III was Ultra II but its actually Extreme III ..... 9 blinks...

I will post the results of the Ultra II 2Gb. I think it will be the some where close to the 1GB (11 blinks) and 4Gb (10 blinks). We'll see if 1 more second will drive me nuts or will the savings is worth the wait. I'm used to fast DSLRs and this new cam will be replacing my outdated and collecting dust Canon S40. Can't wait!!!

I was actually thanking Jim for starting this topic. :)

Guys, does anyone compared the number of blinks if shoot RAW+FINE jpeg and RAW+N640? Is there any speed difference? On the one hand, I would say that saving RAW + physically smaller JPEG would lead to faster write time. But on the other hand, the N640 image need to be resized from 10MP to 640x480, so the possible file size advantage will probably vanish like a steam because of additional resizing step. It would be great to have an option to save just RAW without JPEG ;) I'm sure, it would decrease the RAW writing time (with the fastest cards) to 3 secs or so.

There's no way to save RAW only.
The image preview works only with JPG file. The cam does not recognise RAW file.

So I threw in my spare card, a SanDisk 32MB that came with another camera.

34 blinks.

I would have repeated the test, just to double check, but the card only holds one shot!! haha. :-D

Jim,

I'm going for a record here, or so it seems!

Using the internal memory, which I'm sure was empty beforehand ..... 56 to 58 blinks

Anyone beat that?

You betcha - no wonder Ricoh don't use firmware to pirate the internal memory as a storage buffer - if it is that slow ....

Hehe..exactly the result I expected ;) Now I see all people searching the oldest and slowest card in their drawers. I would suggest to try an MMC card then :D

Sure is a slow old bit of memory they've put in there!

But I've tried another shot, to SD card with a DNG+JPG already recorded in the internal memory, and the number of blinks was as before, so that's presumably not used as a buffer during the JPG extract, write DNG and JPG process.

Nevertheless there's still quite a lot going on and it's not a great surprise we can't get below 4-5 seconds!

Unfortunately, that 32MB SD card is the biggest one I have at the moment! I have piles of Compact Flash, XD cards, and Sony Memory Sticks... but until my new 2GB comes in, I don't have any Secure Digital cards other than that one!!

That being said, yes, the competition is on. I challenge someone to try a smaller SD card than mine! :-D Fortunately, it's a much cheaper competition than finding the fastest!

Well Peter I'm glad you guys are having fun with this, but the aim was to find the fastest card, not the slowest! :) Good job on the reorganization Pavel. PD123 you're welcome.
Still no Panasonic class 6...

You know how it can be some days, idle hands etc! I'd wondered why they'd put in such a miserly amount of internal memory, but there's little point having any more at that speed.

We may moan at how slow our GX100s seem, but another thread led me to check out an old Fuji. Have a look at the TIFF write time shown here (it's under the heading "File Flush / Display Timing") - and you'll never complain again:
