Here's a few pics I've taken the past few weeks. The first two are of my mom sitting on a bench. Which do you prefer?

Here are a few from the other night:

a sunset taken in sunset mode with a bit of saturation added in PP

This one was taken in macro mode:

Thanks for looking and please feel free to comment and critique!

Hi Carol,

I like that 1st shot of your mom. There's always something fascinating about seeing a lone person on a bench with their back to the camera like that. I think the distance in the 1st one helps add to the effect.

Of the rest that shot of the bridge and the water is -stunning-!!!! That's wall hanging material if ever I saw it. Living in So. Cal I never get to see scenes like that and would die for a chance at a shot like that :)

I really like the 1st shot of your mom better, much better, than the second. As Ken said the shot with the bridge is beautiful.

I note that 4 of the 5 posted pics have something reflected in water. The fifth one (with the bee) has a flower. See Pop Photo's August issue, the article "Why we love sunsets ... and other cliches". The three they identify are sunsets over water, flowers, and babies. One of their panel of experts is a psychologist (Steven Pinker) who writes - my summary here - that we have evolved to be attracted to water because we had to live near water to survive and pass on our genes, flowers because they indicate fertile land and fruit to follow and we needed fertile land to survive and pass on our genese, and babies because we have to take care of babies in order to successfully pass on our genes.

I like the first shot of your mother better. In some way she seems to be sitting up a little staighter. In the second one for some reason it seemed more sad than contemplative. All of the other shots are excellent. I'm on a small screen and can't wait to see them bigger.

Carol,

Nice efforts. Your sense of composition is excellent. Since you asked for constructive comments, here goes.

1. I like the picture of your mother but would like to see at least a little of her profile to sense what she is thinking.

2. The bridge photo should be focused on the bridge, not the tree. Use of hyperfocal distance may have helped.

3. The picture with the red cross on the building doesn't seem to have an interesting subject.

4. The sunset scene is very nice. I would have either cropped out the tree trunk entirely or tried to expose for some detail in it.

I know I'm nit picking but it is the little things that separate good pictures from great.
Keep shooting.

Carol,

I also like the first one of your mom. At first I couldn't decide which one, but I choose the first because of the angle in which it was shot put the water as the background to your mom. The second shot too low so her back seems to be emphasized. I also like the shot of the bridge and the water, as the sunset was particularly well done. Nice series.

Gee....never thought of that. I will definately check that out. It's funny, becuause there are posters on this forum who definatley have certain subjects that they prefer to photograph....wonder if there's a "psychological" reason behind that??
Thanks for looking an commenting!

Carol,

Thanks Jerry. I appreciate your comments about the composition. I actually feel like that is my best part of photography. I struggle with post processing and some of the "technical" parts of photography.
1. I like the picture of your mother but would like to see at least a

Okay, thanks for that suggestion. I will keep that in mind next time.
2. The bridge photo should be focused on the bridge, not the tree.
Use of hyperfocal distance may have helped.
Yes, I struggled with taking this shot because there was a man standing (fishing)on the left side of the bridge who was wearing a bright orange shirt. He would have ruined the shot, so I had to "hide" him behind the tree. Is there any other suggestions you might have as to how I could have taken that shot? What do you mean by use of hyperfocal distance would have helped??
3. The picture with the red cross on the building doesn't seem to
have an interesting subject.
Yes, but I kind of like that picture because of the reflection. Just persoanl preference I guess.
4. The sunset scene is very nice. I would have either cropped out the
tree trunk entirely or tried to expose for some detail in it.

No no......you are not nit picking at all. That is what I want is to hear suggestions so that I can improve. Thank you so much for taking the time to critique. I really really appreciate it.
Keep shooting.
I will! :) :)

Thank you Daniel for your comments. Looks like that first shot of my mom is the keeper.

Carol,

The hyperfocal distance can be determined from a chart or calculator, many of which can be found on the WWW. It depends on the focal length of your lens, the size of imaging chip, and the f stop. On the older film camera lenses there was a scale to make it easy. Anyway the point is that if you manually set your lens to the hyperfocal distance, everything from 1/2 that distance to infinity will be in focus. With a very small f stop and enough distance between you and the tree, you might have been able to get it all in focus.
Sounds complicated but with the help of a chart it really isn't.

I also think that the 1st picture is better than the 2nd. In the 2nd one the horizon 'cuts' your mom, which makes the picture... restless or how would I describe. I'm also with Jerry, it would been nice to see where she's looking.

Nice pictures overall :)
