i just return from my weekend . i m very disappointed with my S3IS . there are no image quality in auto mode . and i wanna know that , is flash cannot used according us during auto mode. what settings should apply during auto mode? thanks

I don't know if you have read the manual, but the flash needs to be raised for the flash to come on and you need to force the flash to "on" manually by pressing the button with the flash sign - auto, off or on (if you want flash all the time). It will not flip on its own.

As for the image quality setting, you will need to press the function button and scroll down to image resolution - L, M, S, etc. and toggle via the set button to choose the jpeg compression quality - SF, F, M, L etc.

There are a lot of features on the S3 and I suggest you read the manual and try to understand what each is for.

Personally for me, I always like the complexity of the S5 as it allows me to have better control of the images I took. It's like having to think before starting on anything.

If you are on "Auto" all the time, then I believe you have bought the wrong camera.

Hope this helps and good luck!

As the other poster has written, read your manual. The answers to your questions are all there.

Regarding the flash, I suggest you leave it to "ON", not AUTO. that way when you raise it, you will know it IS going to fire. That's what I do with my S2.

Regarding AUTO mode, do not use it. Ever. You have purchased a camera that needs to be used well to perform very well. The S2-3-5 cameras are NOT designed to be automatic cameras, they are designed to give the user control over every parameter.

Start by switching to P mode and making sure you use the correct (highest) resolution, and use FINE or SUPERFINE compression settings. Then, take a few minutes (that's all it takes) to learn to set ISO and white balance, mainly white balance. you will see your pictures improve dramatically in quality. Once you're confortable with this, you will learn to control your aperture, and you'll start taking amazing pictures.

You should sell S3 and buy Sony DSC-H2. H2 is much much better than S3 because it gives amazing results on Full Auto Mode and Full Manual Mode. Its not very difficult to sell second hand camera.

I'm sorry, but what purpose does this post serve? It will onky confuse the original poster, who has a camera just as capable as the Sony. Both are excellent, but saying the H2 is "much, much better" is false, based on YOUR subjective opinion and not on anything solid.

the OP wants to learn how to use his camera, telling him to sell it serves no purpose. If at least you supported your comment somehow, instead of posting a blanket statement, that could be helpful to some.

Well, I think you need to give us more information about what you didn't like the pictures such as a portrait or a landscape picture's colour or noise.

Try to use P mode and set a preset WB which you like colour tone. And when you take a portrait picture with flash try to use ISO200 or ISO400 it makes pictures with flash more natural .

You are right, both cameras are excellent because both uses Sony's Sensor. well, I mean to say that if camera operator always use the Auto Mode then H2 is better choice because practically it has been prooven that H2 has better Auto Mode. And i am really sorry if i hurt any Canon owner.

You didn't hurt me as an owner, I don't own the S3. I'm not familiar enough with the H2 to agree/disagree with your comment. But considering that:

1-the H2 isn't a current model anymore

2-the original poster already has an S3

I don't see the point in suggesting another camera.

1. H2 is currently available where real poster lives.

2. We change our camera as our need changes. It is not big problem to change the Camera in today's world. Some people cant use manual settings due to lack of knowledge and they are getting poor results on Auto Mode. Some people cant understand manual and some cant give time to study manual photography. If they bought wrong Camera then, is it necessary to stick with it and get poor results? Some people buy camera for 12x Zoom, they dont know about aperture and shutter settings.

first of all, set your camera dial in the "P" mode.

then you can force flash everytime you want to.

but first you have to set it to fire everytime by pushing the flash button (crooked arrow on top left of camera) until you see on you lcd that symbol (not the one with a circle and bar across it or auto under it). now you can have the flash fire everytime you need it by just raising the flash bulb.

and the best advice that was given by a lot of people here, is read and study the manual. i read the manual with the camera by my side and try the features that i think i will need and do it several times as practice, hey it's digital no film to waste here, and i tell you, you will love this camera for what it can do, and do you know you can increase or decrease the intensity of the flash.

no need to sell this camera and take a hit on depreciation, study the manual and soon you will be on your way to being a pro or maybe give us more pointers about the camera ;).

forgiven.....although do bear in mind that we are all in general very helpful here, and should at least get a response (if not an appreciation) for trying to help.

A good way will be to check on "My Threads", the minute you are at the forum page or after logging in.

Good day!
