My wife spotted this little guy on the way to work. He was standing stunned in the middle of the street. Many small birds were still attacking it. A Robin and a few small Sparrows were swooping down. Looks like he had injured or possibly lost his eye. His wings appear to be undamaged and he has become very alert.

I was planning on taking him to the vet but I can't really afford the vet bill. I sent a few messages to some people affiliated with the Audubon Society of PA and am waiting to hear back from them. If this bird lost it's eye than it's going to need some long term care and rehab before released. Anyone have any ideas on what to do with it?

I don't know about the situation where you live but I'm pretty sure that here in the UK, vets will take in and treat wild animals without cost.

Obviously in the case of this lovely little guy, there is a need for long term care as well as immediate medical attention but there are often people or rescue centres that specialise in birds of prey. I would contact your local vet for advice or even speak to a local zoo - they will often know who you should contact.

Good luck and hope the little guy makes it.

I'm not sure whether it would help but I googled "owl rescue PA" and got a few hits including:

Wildlife Rescue, Friendsville PA - (570)-553-2499

Animal Rescue League of Western PA, Verona PA - (412)-793-6900

Hope these help

Thank you both for you help with this. I have a call in to my local vet. He said that he will see the owl at no cost. I also left a message with the Animal Rescue League. Hopefully they will be able to rehabilitate the bird.

Here is the number of the raptor rescue lead in N. VA. Im sure they can point you in the right direction.

I took the owl to the Animal Rescue League. A vet had a quick look at him and said that she thinks he will be ok. She couldn't tell for sure but she said there was a good chance that the eye was still in there. I can call in 48 hours for an update.

I think he is in very good hands. They will actually let me release the animal back into the wild when it is better. I'm not real worried about that. Just want to make sure that it's ok.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Well done!! Thanks for being so kind and considerate to our little winged friend...
I'm sure he (or she) appreciates it....

Just a quick update for those of you that want to know. I called about the owl today and they said it would be ok. It did damage it's eye. They don't know if it will lose it or not. It's on antibiotics and eating regularly. The vet also said that these owls hunt mostly by sound so it's rehabilitation and release into the wild should be pretty easy. I'll call in another week to for an update.

Poor little one-eyed owl. :-(

At least the little feller is hanging in there and doing okay by the sound of it. Let's hope it can be rehabilitated or if not, found a good home.

I wonder what caused the injury in the first place - perhaps another bird of prey decided it would make a tasty snack.

Just called today and the owl is still doing fine. Sometime in the next week or two I will pick it up and release it in the area near where it was found.
