I currently own a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 970Cse inkjet printer. I'm looking to replace it with a higher quality inkjet printer to produce prints from my G2 as well as general printing (text documents etc).

I have been seriously considering the Canon S900 as it not only produces excellent great looking photograhpic quality prints taken on the G2, but does it real FAST. My reservation with the S900 (from the reviews I read) is that its standard 'text printing' capabilities are not very good. I really need a single inkjet printer which will produce quality text as well as photo quality prints. Interested in getting feedback on the S900 on both counts. I also realize that an Epson inkjet may be another cheaper option, but also heard that the S900 may provide more compatible color matching to the same brand Canon G2 camera. All inkjet printer recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scotty

Scotty, I can’t speak for the G2, but from my G1 the Epson Photo Stylus 780 produces excellent prints that match the color on my screen perfectly. If you print on Epson mat heavyweight paper the cost per 8.5 x 11 borderless print is $0.50 per print and the prints will last 25 years.

You may also want to wait for the new Epson PM-950C, which is a 7-colour printer (extra yellow, grey or black depending on which country you are in apparently).

Looks like its going to be similair in spec to the Canon S900 but with the addition of a permanent roll paper holder and a clip-on paper cutter

I have the S800 I use for a photo only printer. I have compared the prints from that printer to Fuji Frontier prints from Walmart and like the S800 prints better. I suggest using Canon Photo Paper Pro.

Epson or Canon for photo printing, but the photo printers generally aren't as good with text. HP if you want both text and photos but the photo quality won't be as good (though some HP people would argue that point).

For occasional text printing the S900 should do a decent job. I have an 8200 (2 printer generations back!) and I find that it is a more than adequate text printer and I have no problems with the quality. Just as with photos it does a better job on better quality paper.

Lesson: Photo printers, especially this series, are very picky about paper, whatever you print.

If you have higher volume requirements for text, and want top quality photos, then you'll have to decide on your compromise point yourself. My daughter cranks out her high school papers on an HP, but we don't print photos on that.

I do like the photo prints I get from the 8200...

I own an Epson Stylus Photo 1200 and recommend it highly for photographs. Particularly nice is the large format (13x19) capability that it affords. It does well with text, envelopes and general printing..

Some pitfalls however:

-The ink utilization is not great, With and 6 color system, the ink resevoirs in the color cart are small, and when one runs out, it's done.
  • The nozzles clog and seem to require frequest cleaning cycles (may be due to environmental factors in my office)
  • If you want good photos, you need to use epson stock. Other papers will not produce the same results. Their product range suits my needs, but it might not suit yours!
Despite the issues, I would still go with the epson (I think the 1280 is the current production replacement for the 1200.

I have many 13x19 photos from my G2, and nobody has ever realized (who didn't already know) that they weren't chemical prints. In fact, I had some printed by a lab, and my wife preferred the color balance produced by the Epson.

Best regards
Matvei

My new Epson 780 ($63 shipped - HSN.com) arrived last night.
I printed two 5x7s from the G2 on it and was absolutely STUNNED by the quality.

I haven't looked under a loupe but to the naked eye, as close as I can get, these prints are photos.
Color matching is 100% faithful.

I've seen replacement color ink cartridges recommended by those on the printing forum going for as little as $12.

For $60 you can afford to have one printer for photos and get another for text.

I am VERY happy and my wife thinks I'm a hero :)

Good luck.

BTW - my HP 932C and 870 (?) print great text but lousy photos.
