With the Brian's recent posting of how to use layers to get better saturation, I seem to recall a recent post about another technique using layers to sharpen images w/out as much artifacting (especially if your source has digital zoom)....

I can't seem to find the right post or link, and apparently didn't save a local copy/reference. It looked pretty good too.
anyone remember that?

Inigo Montoya,

I remember the post, but also do not have a reference to it.

Memory starting to come back... search still not coming up on the keywords I'm feeding it (still think it will only find things a week or two old and older?).

I think it went something like this:

1. Duplicate layer
2. Filter-> Other-> High Pass, value around 4
3. (Optional) Remove color
4. Set blend mode to hard/soft light
5. Adjust opacity of layer to suit.

Sound right to you? Would like to find the original reference though.

An interesting observation just now playing with the above... if you invert the layer it gives a sort of blur effect. I wasn't expecting that... just thought non-edge areas would get sharpened instead.
I remember the post, but also do not have a reference to it.

The closest thing I remember to what you are looking for is
Forrest's excellent "How to make big prints" web site.

Occasionally, I'll start getting bored with the forum. Too many "here are my first pics", "oh, please help, I can't decide" threads, etc. and not enough good technical advise. But then there are days like today, when there is good advise and I am reminded why I come here.

Thanks for the links,
Here are some links (not from this forum) about several sharpening
methods using layers:

That was a post by Spannie on Sunday. I can't find it now in search but I did write it down.

1) Make adjustment layer- Levels; 2,230
2) Make adjustment layer- Hue/Saturation; Saturation +12
3) Select Background
4) Unsharp Mask: 25%, 50 pixels, Threshold 5
5) Unsharp mask: 500%, 0.2 pixels, Threshold 3
6) Smartblur: R 0.6, Threshold 7, Quality Low--C-2100, C-700

I have the Action. He sent it to me if anyone is interested?

that's not the one I'm looking for. The method did not use any unsharp mask. The sharpening was a result of the way the layers were blended.

I think this is the article you are looking for. Scroll down or click on page 2 and it shows how to sharpen images using layers and no unsharp mask.
