e510 Concert test shots @iso800 (imgs) ... Kapono

i can't say i've ever heard anyone being disappointed at getting
stuck in hawaii... :-p
haha, at least i wasn't stuck in traffic ;-)

hg knows what i'm talking about - especially if he lives town. we
don't like to drive over a mile or two to any given location. when i
tell people (in town) that i live kailua, they go "ohhh, far!" (it's
10 miles away!!)
Jan, I don't think most realize that Oahu has a lot of traffic lol
  • That is why I have a office at home.

Guess I will need a pic of my e510 soon ...

imho, nothing beats the 50mm f2 ... and now with the e510 I feel
there is less hunting ... of course a 50mm f2 SWD with focus limiter
would be better :)

If you shot wide during the "day" and Flash at night ... and have the
14-42mm
I think the 50mm f2 is the best choice.
With the 50mm f2 you will see shots I do not think the 14-54mm can
do, imho.
Both in low light, Portrait and in Macro (notice I listed this last)
  • but, during the day the 14-42mm can do a lot of what the 14-54 can.
Plus, the 50mm is sooo sharp ... with 10mp it alows you to crop in
if you have to.
Yes ... you need to have walk back room ... and sometimes in a small
resturant it can be tough.
But what is nice with the f2 is all you need is a little bounce flash
and the shot will look bright and natual. imho.
I visited my local Olympus store today here in town and talked to my camera guy there. He pretty much echoes your sentiments. He also knows the type of photography I do and said the 50mm would be the way to go. I will probably end up getting it before the end of the year so I can try it out at a few football games.
Flip-It PRO is soooo good with f2.
HG
Thanks for the tip on Flip-It. I have the FL-50 and will check into it before next years Draft Party.

Have not really shot sports ... more so, not at night ... that could be challanging! lol

but, I do know that is seems that all the sports photogs ... have all the cool and expensive stuff!

Have been asked to do a Football teams pics ...
But, not on the field stuff.

Let me know how it goes and post some pics ... with the 50mm f2 football at night ... curious how it works out.

OT, question: and if you know of a site ... I can look at with cool football team pics ...
You know ... a group team pic ... and two individual poses kind of thing.
They also want pic for the trophys.
  • Maybe a LAB that specializes in this kind of stuff and can process the shots for me ... and give me options of stuff to sell.
They mentioned ... a magnet ??? or something (I forget)

With the FL50 ... indoors ... and the 50mm f2 ... the Flip-It is amazing.
I don't leave home without it at night. :)

Oh, I won't be working at night. I will be inside the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Not the best lighting in there. Besides the artificial light, it depends on light outside during the day. A bright sunny day, and you will get more light bleeding through that white Dome.

Here is an example of the kind of shots I would be doing with the 50-f2. I will be in the endzone at the railing and within 20 to 30 yards of the players.

Another example is from the Draft Party in April. This is held at the indoor practice facility. Artificial light for the most part but I can get my subjects to stand still for a bit, so I think the 50mm would work well here too.

The only sites I know of do primarily action stuff. No stills of the team. I use Getty Images quite a bit and some of the Official Team sites for the NFL teams, but they also just do individual and action stuff. You might try some of the NCAA College teams. They may have some shots that would give you some ideas.

Ok, Mike ... Cheerleader shot , "trumps" Musician shot LOL

imho, the 50mm f2 would "kill" this shot! ... you would see the differance, right when you open the file on your computer.

And if you could get some kind of bounce off what I think is a white tent, with the Flip-It to fill ... you will thank me latter ... :)

Just got to be careful with the 50mm that things don't get too sharp .. you might love it ... but I have never seen a women tell me ... " you know that tack sharp image, can you put a little more USM on it? "

What is Tony Tam Sing doing these days?
July 4th I got to test how the e510 50mm f2 combo does concerts.
Got to shoot both Day (with group) and Night up close to the
performance.
I will "not" be posting the shots of the group I am shooting for, here.
But, ... I did get to also shoot Kapono (from C & K) at night right
in front!
  • Anyone (Local) that has lived in Hawaii all there life, Knows who
he is! lol

Will split a few shots on the next 2 posts.
All was iso800 ... PP only in LR (except for the close kid watching
the concert .. I had to burn the ear)
e510 Noise Filter = Low ... Only noise reduction was the one in LR
v1.1 at default 25. On two of them I might have gone up on the color
slider to 40-50.

Please let me know what you think?
Got a few weeks to improve on this ... and hopefully get some Post
Processing tips on CS3, anyone got any PP "tips" for these type of
high iso concert shots?
  • Or some fun PS CS Actions or LR pre-sets I can download to make
the concerts shots more ... Reggie/Hip Hop/R&B ... that, is the type
of group I am shooting for.

Taking a few shots of Kapono was a bonus :) ... and great practice.
HG

p.s. I did have a few strange color streaks toward the end of the
shoot. But, that's for another post.
