The Great Italian Flag Lens list thread

... perfectly correct. I have (thanks to your indomitable service
here) downloaded the latest but had not actually updated yet as was
away for a spell and just catching up. Clearly must update asap.
Thanks again. What a nice man - or as they say of the Automobile
Association in the UK's service men, a very very very nice man! :-)
Glad to help. ;-)

I have updated to 5.4.9 (exactly per your destructions) but the lens optimisation choice is still greyed out. Checking the model references, think my camera does not support that feature.

It's the DCS PRO 14n and back display shows 512 MB memory. Under the MENU it shows Lens Optimisation set as AUTO but there are also options for 1, 2 and 3 (though don't know what they mean).

I will have a look on the Kodak website to see if can find out about those but does setting the LO in camera to Auto cancel the option in the Software? In general, I think I need to check a number of things out, including al the options in the software to see what they do. So far, have simply used camera on manual (as always) but it's as found (presumably as set my former owner), as they say, so may well find better settings to use.

With the 14n, you have to set lens optimization in the camera before taking the photo. The lens optimization in Photodesk works only with the SLR/n and SLR/c.

The Auto setting simply chooses one of the 3 levels according to a table of lenses hard coded in the firmware by Kodak. These Auto settings are likely to be wrong for wideangle and/or zoom lenses, since they vary from camera to camera. If you see the infamous Italian flag with any particular lens, do test shots with that lens at 1, 2, and 3 to see which works best. If the best setting is different from what Auto gives you (look at the EXIF to see), you just have to remember to set lens optimization to the appropriate level each time you mount that lens on the camera. This is one of the joys of using a 14n.

Thanks. I will give that a try today. I do not get the problem with the Tamron 28-200 zoom, which actually gives an incredible performance, much to my surprise (it came with the camera) as would never have even used a zoom on 35mm film in the past.

It is occurring with a Micro.Nikor 55mm f3.5, which I thought from past film experience (excellent DOF for landscape work) would give superior results yet in reality, is proving to only match the Tamron's high performance at a 55mm setting for comparison, much to my surprise - so I suppose that in reality, perhaps I should simply stick to the Tamron and solve the problem in one foul swoop! :-)
