D200 - can it take the heat??

Car interior temperatures get high enough to injure or kill people and animals if sealed up. While the camera probably would survive some exposure to heat soaks in a trunk for a couple of hours, there's no real good reason to tempt fate.

If I absolutely had to, I'd probably keep it in a closed dry cooler or similar insulated container and not allow the cooler to get direct sun or to come up to temperature if at all possible. I wouldn't like it though.

We'll be having 100 plus temperatures for a while and I won't leave my gear in the car for extended periods in conditions like that. It will go inside with me or stay home.

If you are driving around and able to air condition the car and get the temps that you can stay in it for extended periods, then the camera will do fine,

I personally never leave anything in the trunk of my car, especially anything of value-even more so expensive, sensitive electronic photo gear with oils, lubricants, rubber grips, adhesives, electronics, solid state circuits...
Heat or not.
To me, at the least, it seems like you're shortening the life of your gear.

And when considering purchasing used gear, it might be a good question to ask: "how was this gear cared for?" If someone told me they stored it in the their trunk in Phoenix (or Baltimore) all summer I'd surely pass on purchasing it.

But that's just me...

And I've never had a single problem with either of my D200's, or any of my other gear. YMMV.

I think I might test this by putting my D200 in the oven at 350
degrees and find out if it can handle the heat. ;-)
Caution! Camera will be hot afterwards. Remove camera with oven mits and place on stove top.

Simply add Fajita seasoning to bubbling liquid plastic melt.

Allow 20 minutes to cool.

Serves potentially 0 images afterwards.

I'm not familiar with summer temps in the northern hemisphere but here in Australia the summer temps get extremely high. Car interiors can get to over +60c; which is enough to warp cassettes etc. and anything plastic.

Either way there is no way I would be leaving my gear in the trunk of a car. You pay a lot of money for good equipment then temp fate by leaving in your car. Apart from heat damage what happens if someone rear ends your car?

My gear travels in my lowepro backpack in the cabin with me and gets taken out whenever I leave the car; it never stays in the car at all.

Sorry guys but I really am amazed that people would treat their good photographic equipment this way.

No biggie. It's all just metal and plastic - not human flesh. If it melts, I buy a new one. This kind of stuff is cheap here, compared to Oz. Life is too short to worry about inanimate objects. Why do you think Pete Townshend smashed his guitars? It's what artists do. Dig?

It's true that it's not human flesh. But most of us don't have money to throw away like that. I hope you'll remember to remove the CF cards as the potential memories will probably for always be lost.

To each his or her own. I'd not leave it in the car personally - but you do as you see best.

A bag full of lens and two cool cameras in your boot... hmm... where did you say you usually park your car?? :-P

Then why did you bother to start this thread in the first place? Just buy a case of D200 bodies and break out a new one if the current one goes belly up or you just decide to smash it for the hell of it.

Dig?

For a sec, I thought that you meant whether the D200 can take the "heat" from Canon's offerings from 5D to the Mark 3....lol
It' summer in the northern hemisphere. How much heat can the D200
take? I like to leave it in the trunk of my car because that way I
have the camera with me nearly everywhere I go. Lately the temp has
been climbing into the 90's, and I'm sure it gets hotter inside the
car's trunk. So far, the rubber grip hasn't melted and the camera
works fine. The D200 should be able to handle it, right?

all digital cameras increase in noise when warm.

the grip on my D200 has never moved and the camera lives in my trunk when I am not using it. And it gets hot (90+). The trunk is better than in the car itself as that area gets extra toasty whereas the trunk is tolerable.
