I'm trying to figure out what lenses to avoid and which to go with.

for all the people out there that love these SLR/n, 14n, and 14nx let's make this one thread and if a lens is affected or unaffected in the subject. I will make the first example.

80-200 2.8 both 2 barrel and push-pull = NO ISSUE
18-35 = NO ISSUE
50 1.8 = NO ISSUE
105 2.0 DC = NO ISSUE [great lens]
35-70 2.8 = NO ISSUE [real sleeper lens!]
300 f4 = NO ISSUE

Frankly, with the SLRn, I've experienced no issues with Italian Flag, red blobs or any of the multitudes of issues discussed. I've considered myself lucky.

I've found life just doesn't fit in 1 camera or manufacturer vision.

Not all 14ns are the same regarding the Italian (or Mauritian) flag. Not all 14ns need the same lens optimization settings. In fact, most of the lens optimization settings posted on the Kodak web site long ago were wrong for my 14n and lenses. So if you are (un)lucky enough to have a 14n, you really need to do your own tests, especially to find the best lens optimization settings.

I'm sure I posted the white-wall tests for my 14n somewhere here years ago. I'll try to find them again later.

SLR/ns rarely have the Italian flag. With an SLR/n, you might get green at the ends and magenta in the middle or vice-versa, since the color shift is radial instead of lateral like it is on a 14n (loosely speaking--the color shifts actually get quite complicated). I don't know if there's any flag with that design.

Funny you should mention this, I was doing some test of my own with this lens over the weekend. While SLR/n doesn't have the Italian flag, it does have purple and blue fringing. Here's an example. I just converted it with PD, no other adjustments what soever. I agree with your findings.

I can't find a list of the color shifts and lens optimization settings for my lenses with the 14n, and since I don't have the camera any more I've forgotten the best optimization settings. But here's what I recall about color shifts at the best optimization settings:

Mild color shift (tolerable for most subjects except white walls, seamless backdrops, etc.):
12-24 Sigma
16/2.8 AF Nikkor
200/4 Micro Nikkor

Moderate color shift (tolerable for brightly colored subjects without large expanses of any one color):
14/2.8 AF Nikkor (and not sharp enough for 14n's resolution)
20/2.8 AF Nikkor (and not sharp enough for 14n's resolution)
24/2.8 AF Nikkor (and not sharp enough for 14n's resolution)
35/2 AF Nikkor (and not sharp enough for 14n's resolution)
60/2.8 Micro Nikkor except for close-ups
105/2.8 Micro Nikkor except for close-ups
80-400 VR Nikkor

Severe color shift:

35-70/2.8 AF Nikkor
60/2.8 Micro Nikkor used for close-ups
105/2.8 Micro Nikkor used for close-ups

On the Pro DCS 14n, the Tamron 28-200 I got with it works fine. Actually, far better than I would have expected. I recently got (ebay of course) what I have always considered the best of the Nikon lenses - the 55mm Micro. It is the f3.5 but that should make no difference as on film, it was superb.

Have only taken a few with this, all at either f22 or f32 and all exhibit the magenta-ish on right, green-ish on left syndrome. Most noticeable on subjects with light sort-of-neutralish tone values.

I have found that the Lens Optimisation adjustment is greyed out so unable to use - and some links given to previous discussions are no longer working, especially one to a pdf format that(I gather) dealt with this topic in some depth (think the link was given by Doyle? in another similar and recent thread).

Are you still using Firmware 5.4.1 by any chance? You'll need either 5.4.6 or 5.4.9 to re-enable the Manual Lens Optimization settings.

... perfectly correct. I have (thanks to your indomitable service here) downloaded the latest but had not actually updated yet as was away for a spell and just catching up. Clearly must update asap. Thanks again. What a nice man - or as they say of the Automobile Association in the UK's service men, a very very very nice man! :-)

the "search strings" in my site stats are ridiculous.

if the authorities looking at it, I would probably be getting questioned right now.
some sick searches find their way to my site.
