Hello all: Can anyone recommend any decent cataloguing software for my CP. The Cumulus/Canto program isn't what I had in mind and I haven't seen much discussion on this subject. I'm looking for a basic, clean program; thumbnail views and keyword capabilities primarily. I'll take care of organizing it all into my own folders.

Thanks,
Eric

New canon printers come with a nifty program called ZoomBrowzer. I think it's great. Shows thumbs of everything and allows you to catargorize by folders, even though you can always see the contents of the folders. (Does that make sense?) You can easily zoom in on stuff and even do slide shows. Of course, if you aren't in the market for a printer then you'll have to try something else. Just my two cents worth.

Have a go at Jasc After Shot. Same Category capabilities as IMatch, but a fraction of the learning curve.

Hi Eric,

you can try ACDsee, it's a very user friendly picture viewing software. Try search from download.com.

the software provides thumnail of all the pictures within a folder. and the interface as same as window explorer. and if your mouse can scroll, you can roll it to view the picture by picture , full screen. it also provide all detail of the picture like ISO, F, exposure time, date..... when u click the picture properties.

IrfanView (www.irfanview.com)

Freeware, powerful and user-friendly.

Hi,

I used to use Thumbsplus but switched to iMatch, a German shareware product. Half the cost of T+ and much more powerful. Includes photo and news database templates and imports several (ACDSee, I think as well as .CSV). I didn't like Irfanview' it broke all my imaging associations and put stupid little Irfanview icons on every imaging file in explorer. The latest version of ACDSee did have some teething problems as well, but seems to be fixed. ACDSee is quite popular.

I like iMatch because it uses an ingenious keywording technique called categories. In Thumbsplus you get one LLOONNGG keyword list which you have to search. iMatch uses explorer-like categories. This way I didn't have to create new database fields in T+.

Others have given you some good options, but I'll add another. Note, I find that managing these cataloging programs takes more time that I am willing to put into this at present. Yes, that causes me problems occaisonally trying to find stuff, but I have found if I don't get the associations correct the first time, I'll likely miss images that I want when doing a search. As a result, I currently rely on my failing memory.

The program I was referring to is Retriever which you can find at:
http://www.djuga.net/retriever.html

It does the usual slide show/thumnailing/minimal editing stuff. I do still like it for reviewing photos, though I also use IrfanView a lot. Also, it has this nifty photo-mosaic feature that can be a lot of fun - espically if you have a LOT of images lying around.
