Hi,

I am off to Europe for a while, and want a few 512MB Compact Flash cards to complement my 1gig microdrive. Any suggestions on super deals? Do you think a couple of 512 cards is a better deal than another 1gig drive? I was thinking I could use the 512s in my D30 as well as my DCS520, but I would apprciate any advice.

Thanks,

Jack

Have you tried newegg.com? Mr. Flash 512mb compact flash cards are $189 (last I checked). I've never ordered/used this brand myself, but a friend has and has had no problems. Not sure on speed comparisons. Anyone else used these?

I have a 256mb Mr Flash card that i bought a newegg.com. I use it with my D2000 and it works great. Last time i checked newegg two 256mb cards were cheaper than one 512mb card. I guess it all depends on how many cards you want to carry with you

I just picked up a 21X generic 512mb CF on EBAY from Get it Got it Good company. $214 including shipping. The speed is really great, card is working just fine so far.

While a 1 gig certainly has a lot of storage capacity, the idea of a couple of 512 cards appeals to me. That way all of your shot are not on one card. One thing I found out about microdrives is that they take a lot of power and they don't work with those digital wallets unless you have a power supply. I don't know if I explained this correctly so, perhaps, someone more knowledgable can set me straight.

The Ridata 512 Compact Flash cards have received many positive reviews. The only place I know that carries this card is http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au/ridata/ in Austraila, but their shipping is fast and reasonably priced.

I have several Mr. Flash cards, and while they all work fine, they are rather slow. Check around for speed charts vs. other cards, I saw one somewhere. Good price, but if you can find something faster for close to the same $$, I'd go elsewhere.

Iomega had a deal on 1 gig MD's for $179, perhaps another one is a good bet.

Yes... very slow. I got a 256MB Mr Flash and ended up sending it back. It took about 40 secs to write 5 raw photos ( 14mb) versus 26sec for my Viking 128MB and 23 secs for the SimpleTech 256 that I got to replace the Mr.Flash.

I use a D30, other cameras may act differently.

The 1GB Microdrive is available directly from Iomega for $229 and no one seems to even come CLOSE to that mydigitaldiscount mentioned earlier. They are at $225 for 512MB CF and everyone else is > $300 (ecost.com, buy.com, etc.). If those CF cards are really 26X as described those should SCREAM.

Best of luck on the search. If you find any good deals, let us all know. I need a few new ones myself :)

Hi,
how much you think it cost to make a 512mb compact flash card like $5?

You may have had a defective flash card. I have the Mr. flash 256mb and 512mb cards, and it takes 24-26 seconds to write 5 RAW files on my D30. I don't shoot continuous drive mode, but when I shoot single shot mode I get about a 3 second write time for RAW files with Mr. Flash.

I have considered the Iomega 1GB MD, but I have read on these forums that they intend produce significant amounts of heat when taking multi-shots. That would be my only decision to go with the CF cards.
