Nikon p5000 is COOL !!!

Well...I thought I had a lot of toy's! What are those after the fisheye?

I like the P5000 also, in part because I also have so many lenses (about 5 of them) already. If I'm wearing cargo pants, I can bring a couple of lenses and a flash with me, and it's like a mini SLR kit.

I also like that at the wide end the lens is 2.7, which makes it great in low light. Very Cool!

I'm sure you are having great fun, but this is like putting top-of-the-line Pirrelli tires on a 1984 Honda Civic.

If you're going to accessorize to that extent, why not invest a little more on a D40X or D80 and get the real thing? The P5000 is still a low-end camera compared to these DSLRs. Adding expensive gadgets to it doesn't improve the sensor, the processing, the bit depth, the focus speed, etc.

OK -- sorry. Go back to having fun with your P5000.

Abe,

Your point is well taken.

I have been gearing up with addons for both the 8800 and 8400, and its a substantial amount of investment, but almost all of it is at fully depreciated pricing.

These little systems are quite a joy to use, ISO limitations and performance aside, and the nice thing is, that almost all of it can be sold on ebay for what we paid for it on ebay.

So I have to say that I am taken by the d40's diminutive size and IQ, but at the same time, I'm not in any hurry to go down that path, and I'll probably end up keeping most of the Coolpix stuff anyway.

More power to Nikon for making these P&S systems, like the P5000, available.

Lugging around all the equipment I need for my work (2 bodies, lenses, yada yada), it is a pure joy to grab the CoolPix and go out.

I often use my 8400 or 995 for press work, when I don't want to carry around the 'equipment' -- or when the place I'll be photographing isn't happy seeing SLRs.

Most recently, I photo'd several celebrities at an event where "pro" equipment wasn't allowed. I just pulled out the 8400 and got shots of the big names and they even posed and smiled for me.

And, when I'm not staring into my own reflection on the P 5000 LCD (yes, I've finally gotten that pretty much figured out), I am getting shots in situations where people would have been upset if I was holding the 'equipment.'

So bring it on, Nikon, keep the CoolPix series alive and thriving for years to come!

The way a coolpix with built-in lens interfaces to auxiliary optics is wholly different than a DSLR. I have a very high end Leitz microscope for which I still keep my Nikon 4500 to photograph stuff. The reason is that it is simple and very inexpensive to simply screw the camera onto the eyepiece thread and take pictures free of mirror slap vibration. A DSLR would require a very expensive photo projection lens, give less effective magnification, and need a vibration isolation stand.

Sometimes having a camera that interfaces via eyepiece projection is very handy and very inexpensive, and it helps when the diameter of the lens matches the diameter of the eyepiece.

I have been collecting and using coolpix acessories in 7 years, with my Nikon Coolpix 990 ( genius camera, i miss it already ).
Sold my Nikon 990 for 135 EURO and then i bought P5000 for 300 EURO.
P5000 is OK P&S camera, but i know it have some focus and noise problems.
The best of all that it have VR and good videofunction.

I'm interested in the P5000 but was disappointed by the crippled hot shoe. According to the manual, the hot shoe will only work with the Nikon SB-400, SB-600 and SB-800 flash units. I'd like to use my Vivitar 283 and a smaller Starblitz flash with the P5000 (both have trigger voltages under 10 volts) but this appears not to be possible. Does your SB-27 work with the P5000?

Thanks
I have now taken som pictures of my new GADGET :P

The hot shoe is not crippled in any way, it's just a normal hot shoe with the additional contacts for Nikon iTTL. So your flash will work, but without the iTTL comfort.

Thanks for your response. I'm interested in the P5000 but after reading through the manual (which I downloaded in PDF format) I concluded that the hot shoe would only work with Nikon flashes SB-400, SB-600, and SB-800. If it will work with third-party units the manual is very misleading indeed. I'm afraid my question may get buried in this thread. I hope you won't feel offended if I start another P5000 flash thread in order to get some more input. I really would like to hear from other P5000 users who may have used non-Nikon flash units with their P5000s. Thanks again for the info; I feel better now.

Nikon tends to be not very helpful with regard to technically "creative" and/or 3rd-party solutions ...

not at all.

But the matter is quite simple, actually.
Have a look on top of the P5000:

In the hot shoe, you have the "old" center contact that your Vivitar has, plus three smaller contacts that are used by iTTL flashs. The flash is fired through the center contact, but controlled through the others.

The P5000 will fire your flash, but won't control it, and neither will the flash pass on any information to the P5000. You will have to set your shutter speed and f-stop and your flash accordingly. The Vivitar's sensor will control the exposure, as usual.

Best, Rainer

The appearance of the shoe was one of the things that got me wondering. It looks just like any other hot shoe with the large center contact and the other proprietary contacts for Nikon flashes.

Right. That's just what I want to do.

Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed response. I really appreciate it!
