Hello,

I currently have a Nikon d70 which im very happy with but its just so damn big and heavy (and intrusive for street work) that ive decided to look for a smaller compact to go with it that i can take with me everywhere. Im looking at a spend of about 250-280 and a wide angle lens is the most important factor in choosing as most of my work is wide angle urban and landscape photography.

Im looking for any users to to give me thier thoughts particulary on the noise problems ive read about. If i shoot exclusivly RAW which i think i would then is this less of a problem, also are thier any options for choosing what colour space you work with ie. sRGB or AdobeRGB ?? Also is this camera well constructed? does it have a metal or plastic body?

Any thoughts greatly recieved.

metal body, no choice sRGB, there are some RAW issues where people say there is some processing "cooked in" others will post on it. I use low ISO jpeg (I have d-lux3).

Might want to wait the 2-3 weeks and see if Panny announces anything. They have a history of announcing new products in mid July (including the LX models) however this year there is speculation that there won't be a new LX.

Somehow I missed this thread yesterday. It looks like you made your choice but I thought that I would point out what Thom Hogan had to say about digicams he uses as a supplement to DSLRS:

At present, I can only recommend four candidates, and even then only half-heartedly. In order of preference:

1. Leica D-Lux 3 (also available as Panasonic LX2). From a control standpoint, LeicaPano gets most things right. For running manual controls while shooting this camera shows it was designed by a photographer, whereas the rest appear to have been designed by Play Station junkies. The menus and deeper UI leave a lot to be desired though (try figuring out how format a card--at no point does LeicaPano use the word "format"!). The LCD is good. The speed is good. The shooting controls are excellent. The lens is outstanding, trumping everything else by a long shot. Unfortunately, the pixels are mush. Even at the base ISO looking at a 100% view you'll have a hard time seeing edges. Noise and NR conspire to ruin the low-level integrity of the data, making this really a camera that can't go beyond a modest print size. Still, my favorite of the bunch, by a fair margin.

Excuse the interruption here - I've been dithering and dithering oiver a D-Lux-3 for a couple of weeks and still don't seem like getting anywhere. That LX2 price seems very good from what I recall seeing. Do you mind if I ask where from ... I think such as PurelyGadgets are at a good price , but not sure if it's best one .. and do they have Black ... ?? But I still feel that the missing long zoom is a drawback - and I wonder if by comparison maybe with any long lens you have on the Nikon is going to show up the deficiency ???

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I use mine alongside a D2X for exactly the reasons given, and the above comments sum it up well.

Raw does go some way to combating the "mush" problem, though. And using it only in good light. Oh, and when it's noisy, convert to B+W instead of denoising. It looks quite nice that way.
