I have a D200 and like it very much.

It is a little big for certain things. What would you recommend for a compact camera.

Thanks

There's another forum here better suited to ask that question.

That said, ask yourself what it is you're after specifically in this compact - low light quality (yeah right... - with the possible exception of the mentioned Fuji's), wide angle for landscapes or inside shots (not too many 28mm equivalents out there, Panasonic DMC-FZ3, Canon SD800IS to name a few of the better ones), how small do you need it to be, etc.

I ended up with an SD800IS myself as I wanted something very small with an 28mm equivalent, good build quality and reasonable optical quality. Quite happy so far - of course knowing its limitations. I use D2H/D2X otherwise.

Thx,
Christophe.

You can't have everything - where would you put it?

I choose it because of the Nikon DSLR-like interface and the compatibility with the SB400-flash (and SB600, SB800). Of course it cant compete with a DSLR, but the IQ is good and it is fun to use.

I love my D200. I bought a Canon SD800 for when I don't feel like carrying a lot of equipment. It's a terrific little camera, but I find it a tad too small for my hands. (And I don't have unusually large hands.) I just ordered a Canon A640 after playing with a friend's. It should arrive on Thurs.

... assuming high ISO performance in a small package is favored over (or at least equally important to) outdoor daylight shooting.

As usual, YMMV + caveat emptor.

Can't be doing with the 35mm-equivalent restriction just so you can get a ludicrously long zoom.

As a concert photographer high ISO performance si really important. And when it comes to that the Fuji F31 I have bought recently just made most sense. It's a nice small camera, easily fits on your pocket you can drag it around all day every day. Camera looks really sturdy so... if you haven't bought anything yet... go for the Fuji F31 ;)

Get it, its a amazing camera. It always accompanies my D2X and D200. On a recent trip to the Black Forest I thought I wouldnt need it and wanted to carry only the SLR's. On one occassion in a castle they would allow pictures to be taken in the castle but through the windows. So had carried this in my pocket and really used it. The results are amazing, the battery fantastic, the macro superb, lowlight shots fantastic. No other camera to beat this IMHO.

Fuji F30/1 - great low ISO, difficult to poor in bright daylight

P5000 - slow autofocus, DOUBLE the compression of the Canon G7, plenty artifacts with PP, mediocre lens, sent it back.
G7 - best of a mediocre bunch, good IQ at ISO 400 and lower.

Bring back the great old Coolpix range... like the 8400. Woe is the state of the compact camera market in 2007! Too many pixels, too small sensors, too many gimmicks...

Or you could try the Ricoh GX100 - getting good user reviews!

W30.

Waterproof. I can take it where I can't take my D200

(Disclaimer: I have a W10)
