Hi,

Just got my GX100 today and i checked the firmware which showed 1.14, so it is supposed to be a newer batch.

However, i can still see the hotpixels in long exposures. I did a little test for my own, and the result shows that regardless of what the ISO is, at exposure from 1/2s to 2s the hotpixels are rather obvoius, whereas anything longer than 2s the hotpixels are minimal (or quite acceptable).

On the other hand, unless i view my pix at pixel peep level, or anything close to it, i cant really see the hotpixels.

I checked almost all the posts regarding this issue and i see some GX100 owners are happy with their cams and get clean long exposure pictures. Could anyone of you post a clean long exposure picture so that i know how bad my cam is?

Thanks in advance and sorry if this another hot pixel post bores you.

Well Gary, now you mention it .....

But seriously, why not try printing, say, one quarter of an image at 8x10 (or A4) - and judging how bad it really is from the results that you get ?

Hello and congrats

No, the issue doesn't bore me as much as it surprises me. It surprises me that people are so devoted to find flaws and qualities they don't like with the camera so that they can get into a steadily increasing speed towards "I'm not happy with this camera".

I suggest you read up on the subject. Educate yourself, and live with it, or without it. It's your choice.
I googled it, and found
http://www.imaging-resource.com/ARTS/HOT/HOT.HTM as a good start.

I hope I'm not coming across as snappy. But sometimes we can choose, whether to be happy, or unhappy. I prefer happiness ;-)

Hope you stay here

Yup. Happy camper. Got my GX100

Thanks Peter and Roger for your advice.

May be i didnt put my message clear enough, but i am not trying to find flaws to the camera i decided to buy and invest in. In fact, it is that i like this camera and i want to make sure it is working fine.

if someone out there have the same model which doesnt exhibit the hotpixel issue, why do i have to accept one that does? What surprises me is not the hot pixels because i read many posts reporting it, it is in fact some of the models out there do not have this problem which surprises me.

Be sure that i will stay here because i like this camera and thats why i bought it. but IF there are cameras out there which have no hot pixel issues then i am interested to see the samples.

Thanks.

I think all GX100's have some hot pixels visible on long exposures by pixel-peeping. It's common on all cameras. However they are not visible in print due to only being a handful of isolated pixels out of 10'000'000.

If it really bothers you then try this free Photoshop plugin, it works very well at removing them without any image damage:

Thanks for the link. it works very well.

If all GX100s have the same issue then i am ok with it, because it is just a camera you have to fall in love with. But I read some users can get clean images from theirs which interest me.

Cheers,

Hi GaryP,

I'm facing the same problem as yours. Where did you buy the camera from? I tried two samples from Adorama, and I suspect that their current batch has this problem.

I'm thinking about ordering from Popflash. Hopefully their camera would perform better in the hot pixel department.

Yes, I don't like pixel-peeping too, and I'm so tired of this issue. I just want to get a good sample and start shooting with it. But the two samples that I tried are just unacceptable. The hot pixels are visible even when the picture is viewed at "fit-to-screen" mode on my 20" monitor.

I have never seen so many hot pixels even for my FujiF30 and Canon A series. I hope it is just a bad batch, not a "feature" by design.

especially the last couple posts.

Looks like some GX100s really have more hot pixels than others???
the test result is interesting, but it depends on the threshold you set for the hotpixel/deadpixel.

I bought mine in Hong Kong and the firmware that comes with it is 1.14, so i don't think it is part of that "bad batch" (unless the shop upgraded it!!)

The problem lies at 2 seconds, which the hot pixels appear worst to me. I can also see the hotpixels at fit to screen size.

My test result for ISO80, F2.5,
1s - 8 hotpixels
2s - 628!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4s - 1 hotpixel

If we don't hear or see any samples from other owners which have a "good" copy then i think we will just have to avoid 2s exposure.

it is just an excellent camera with snowflakes at 2s exposure. :)

Thanks
