Where's DavidP?

No, it's a nightmare.. A daily nightmare, and it's not getting any easier. I know a lot of people think I through my weight around but I really don't, I'm probably one of the most laid back forums owners around.. A lot of people get away with a lot more than they would on other forums, but I like it that way. Sometimes I have to step in and sometimes I do have to ban people, either for life or just for long enough for them to feel as though they should comply.

The rules are simple enough to understand and if everyone sticks to them this will remain a pleasant place.

P.S. - With that said, Phil has every right to do as he does and I
respect his decisions regardless of whether or not I agree with
them. It must be quite a chore making sure everyone keeps on the
straight and narrow.

I'm not going to comment on DavidP's behaviour and second-guess
Phil for banning him. However, as someone who used to regularly
read this forum and occasionally participate, I will comment that
the quality of this forum has noticably and dramatically declined
in the past several months. I now only check it every week or so
in the hope that it has rebounded. Actually, it seems to be
getting worse, not better.

If Phil has decided to do something about it by moderating the
forum more actively, I would see that as a good thing. Too bad
that it is necessary.
I notice the DavidP is now reducing the signal-to-noise ratio over
at Fred Miranda's forum. Pity.

Phil is really god around. But I would not let him make you paranoid.
I only time I had some dealing with Phil directly, is when I posted a reply to
someone giving me opinion that Phil had no choice but to start a new
forum. Phil replied to me this is his website and he can decide what
forums can be here or not.

I laugh at god o mighty, said to myself someone has to much free time
on their hands to be concerned about what I say. Phil Asky is known
world wide and no one know about me. Or his does not have a sense of
humor.

I swear Phil has his search engine, searching for messages with his
name and a red light goes on top of his hammer of might call the PC
by us mortals. Then comes divide justice by god, do I banned the
mortal or not.

My two cents, please god do not take that away from me.

Where has my thread gone? The one that said it was.. "My last thread" (this query is also to assertain if I too have been banned, not a retraction from my original standpoint)
David used to post 7-10 messages per day. No posts for six days
according to his profile. Anybody checked up on him? Maybe a
concert trip?

i believe in forgiveness...1st of all, banning davidp for 1st time offense (?) seems a little harsh....maybe phil should adopt 3-strike law before banning someone unless the user causes serious damage to server or serious foul language

even so, maybe we should ban him/her for a period of time, say 3 months and then allow the user to re-join, hopefully 'transformed'

we, human , are quick to judge, and 'criticize'...we should also be quick to forgive :-)

What keeps "banned" individuals from simply re-registering under a different name- as many times as they want?

Just curios- not planning on "flaming" everyone and re-registering :)

If I told you that then I'd give away too many secrets. Lets say there are many ways to identify an individual but it's certainly not impossible to get around, if you REALLY wanted to you could re-register. But that's not really the point.. It'll take you a while to re-register and takes me approx 5 seconds to ban you. It could take you hours to write fifty messages and take me about 5 seconds to delete all those messages.

Oops, I flamed him a bit. Not sure why people are so offended by someones rules. Are these the same people who feel they have a "Right" to do whaterver they want, whenever, and to whoever...kind of a spoiled attitude! What kind of guest are they? It's a great misunderstanding of the Biblical word "judgement" as in "do not judge your neighbor" to use this line/implication against people who are speaking against the "action" of others. i.e. Saying that "certain language is not appropriate for this forum" is much different than saying "people that use this kind of language are deserving of hells fire" / simplification I realize, but "don't judge" me posters may want to re-consider the lingo the use. Like a home owner, Phil may ask his guests to act in whatever manner is appropriate to him or ask them to leave!

Just because so many people requested it, and because I hadn't banned him for life I've just re-instated DavidP's posting rights.

For anyone who's interested we have 40 banned users and 31500 active registered users.

Out of (more) curiosity, what criteria are you using to define "active"? A certain timescale since last posting?

n.
A bitter, abusive denunciation

[Latin diatriba, learned discourse, from Greek diatrib, pastime, lecture, from diatrbein, to consume, wear away : dia-, intensive pref.; see dia- + trbein, to rub; see ter-1 in Indo-European Roots.]

Word History: Listening to a lengthy diatribe may seem like a waste of time, an attitude for which there is some etymological justification. The Greek word diatrib, the ultimate source of our word, is derived from the verb diatrbein, made up of the prefix dia-, “completely,” and trbein, “to rub,” “to wear away, spend, or waste time,” “to be busy.” The verb diatrbein meant “to rub hard,” “to spend or waste time,” and the noun diatrib meant “wearing away of time, amusement, serious occupation, study,” as well as “discourse, short ethical treatise or lecture, debate, argument.” It is the serious occupation of time in discourse, lecture, and debate that gave us the first use of diatribe recorded in English (1581), in the now archaic sense “discourse, critical dissertation.” The critical element of this kind of diatribe must often have been uppermost, explaining the origin of the current sense of diatribe, “a bitter criticism.”

What kind of guest are they?
We are not guess. This is a public place, granted with limits. I do not
go to someone home to be bombarded with advertising. Or when
I go to someone home they are a stranger like we all here. Can we
pick each other out in a crowd on the street?
Saying that"certain language is not appropriate for this forum"
Is not only language which I agree there is public and personal
but photos and topics. Phil has stated what photo can be here
and what topics can be discussed. I feel that there is an
unspoken word here that you cannot disagree with Phil without
the possibility of being banned. Also I reminded you that the rules
have changed. There are old photos or topics that have been purge
from the database that where ok in the past. It seems to me that is
like changing history to meet the criteria used today.

If you think I am offended you are wrong. I am just surprised again
to see that someone has modified their behavior so they are
under Phil's radar. I find the someone reads about someone who
was banned they watch carefully the words used. I think this
is fear. You can disagree with me on this, but on the surface
it looks and smells like fear to me.

I thought the word "Sucks" was on Phil list of words you cannot
use here. Learn something new.

It's good to know where you are comming from, in my opinion your previous post was not constructive, this was. Mind if I ask a couple more questions?

In what way do you consider this a public place? Isn't this company privately owned?

Should I be allowed to express myself any way I choose in McDonalds? Paint the Stalls? How about the Performing Arts Center- Converse as loudly as I choose on my Cell? Should McDonalds be allowed to advertise Coke/Pepsi stuff?

Changing rules can be a bit frustrating, do you think Phil should make the rules more readily accessable from the home page/other page? How would you like to see the rules revised?

Consider: If rules are going to be enforced, someone has got to be the radar. How would you change the monitoring system.

It probably is, I hope Phil only gives me a warning, as I failed to consult the list.

Idea: Maybe Phil should select a few reliable users to develope a Forum comittee to develop/periodicaly revise the DPReview.com forum rules. Whould this seam more reasonable?

Anyone can join here, like anyone can go to a park. You do not even
have to own a camera to be here. You just have to mind your
tongue or ideas and try to be civil to each other. Semi-Public for lack
of better word

I really do not understand where you are coming from on this or
it is probably over my head.

See answer below.
Consider: If rules are going to be enforced, someone has got to be

This is not my idea, a moderator in each forum. The person can give
warnings to people that this is not tolerated and could be banned if
they continue. The are warned before and others can see the
person being warned. Not after the fact like we have now.

I think we are already there. I cannot see Phil adding anymore rules.
But never underestimate someone who is determined to get his/her
point across. The length they will go to make Phil's life a living hell
has always surprised me.
It probably is, I hope Phil only gives me a warning, as I failed to

Phil should post a list on words that cannot be used. But then it is
Catch 22. The list would be banned and Phil Askey too! :)))
