CLA-1 adaptor and filter

I have just purchased the c4040 and would like to protect the lens. I bought the CLA-1 adaptor and the 43-55mm step up ring, but was dismayed to find that the 55mm ring obscured the lower portion of the picture composition through the viewfinder. Since then, I purchased an inexpensive 43 mm lens protector and placed it on the CLA-1 ring. I don't seem to be having any problems with vignetting, but was warned by other photographers that this would be an issue. The camera is certainly much less bulky without the second adaptor, but I don't want to compromise image quality. Has anyone else tried this combination to protect their lens and how satisfied have they been with the results? Thanks in advance for your guidance.--L1

The problem is that your lens may crash into your filter without a spacer ring in between your CLA-1 and the filter

As far as seeing the top of the ring being visible in the viewfinder, it won't effect your final picture. Just something to consider.

Thanks for your answer John. I did have that problem initially, but just loosened the adaptor and the filter slightly and it hasn't happened since. Other than that, do you think there will be problems?

You're right Chris, but it is annoying, especially since I try to use the viewfinder as much as possible to preserve battery life.

Should be no problem, if something doesn't loosen further and fall off.

I rigged up the same system on my 2040Z and also found that the lens would BARELY touch the filter when extended. My solution was to back the filter off until I had about a 1/32" gap and then push in some very fine black vinyl lacing (fly tying matl), then tighten the filter securely. Since I don't plan on changing filters (just using a UV to protect the lens), it worked great. I wouldn't recommend partially unscrewing the CLA-1 because it's only on by about 2 threads. This also keeps everything as short as possible and the same diameter (43mm) compared to using a step-up ring.

I have the Tiffen lens adaptor and it does not have this close clearance problem. My only reason at the time for buying it over the CLA-1 was price. Now after reading these posts, I'm glad I got the Tiffen adapter. The Tiffen 43mm filters are less expensive than the Oly's also but seem to work very well.

Hey Steve, does the tiffen cause any vignetting when the camera is at full wide angle? The tiffen is slightly longer, correct?

Thanks, John

I have a 3040 and use an adapter that uses 52mm filters. No vingetting, but very close up flash has partial blockage on flash coverage. I take it off for really close up flash pictures.

Thanks everyone for their comments. I'll let you know if I run into any other problems with the CLA-1 and filter.

John,

Sorry for the delay in responding. To answer your question, there is no vignetting even at full wide angle. I have never compared the CLA-1 side by side with the Tiffen so I can only speculate(based on the previous posts) that the Tiffen must be slightly longer. When you turn on the camera, the lens extends and stops just short of my 43mm Tiffen UV protective filter. Why Olympus would design theirs to smash into the filter is beyond me. I guess they make more money forcing you to buy an extender.

The CLA-1 is not designed simply as a filter holder, it's designed to take various auxiliarly lenses. As existing aux lenses are of different sizes, they require step-up rings. If the CLA-1 were long enough for a filter without a step-up ring, it would be too long for all the existing Oly aux lenses.

BTW, I've been using a Raynox 41mm-37mm lens tube (which came in a set with the 2x and 4x Raynox close-up lenses) with a 37mm UV filter and no step-up ring. Although I've never noticed it in normal photos, I just ran a test, photographing a plain white wall, and I can see some slight darkening of the corners at full wide-angle. It only obstructs the flash at macro distances, though, so I think I'll stick with it. (This is with a C-2020Z.)
I have the Tiffen lens adaptor and it does not have this close
clearance problem.
