Digilux 3 Hand Built?

Sorry, I haven't even touched an M8 as yet ... Nor do I really understand what you're asking.

I do believe that the M8 is stamped Made In Germany, however.
See this photo from Phil Askey's preview:

It's on the back of the camera above the LCD.

Godfrey -
I think that maybe you are a good possibility as to giving maybe a
definite answer to a point I made in a very update posting on Pana
Forum. I quote the post link here in entirety for convenience - do
you know if indeed ANY of these latest do have such a thing as
'Made in Germany' now ?? .. either the Digilux, L1 or the M8 even
??? Just curious in view of what I understand is the present
desire of the Leica family to restore the 'real' Leica basis as we
always had it.

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

No one in either forum, Leica or Panasonic, has any direct
knowledge of how or to what degree the Digilux 3 and L1 are
assembled by Matsushita. What has been expressed is speculation.

The Raw/Jpeg firmware processing discussion, while interesting, is
off topic here and deserves its own space.

Why is a discussion of in-body RAW/JPEG firmware off topic on a forum dedicated to digital cameras? And particularly in a thread which is discussing the differences between two nearly identical cameras?

That's ridiculous.

Is there anyone who can address the manufacture question originally posted? Where are these cameras hand assembled, Japan, Germany? Are there different assembly lines for each brand with different quality checks? Has anyone actually seen this? Really. It's an honest inquiry. - Jack

There are definitely different quality checks and tighter tolerances for the Leica version. That has been stated by Leica. When I was in the process of buying one I asked that question of Leica and the response was as I stated above.

Now.................having said all that................why do you want to know?
Are you making a decision between the two?

When I got mine there was a 500 dollar difference. It is much greater now and the L1 is much more affordable.

Go get one!

Actually, he said he used flash. The presumption is that he used the camera flash, or a mounted flash. Presuming he did not use a calibrated studio flash system, there could be enough difference in the light output that the RAW data will be substantially different.

No two small flash units will be exactly alike. Even the same unit used on both cameras may not flash exactly the same from one shot to the next.

So, you may see data that is close or not, but not in any way identical.

Great.
That kind of makes the original question moot doesn't it?
No. I believe both cameras are made exactly the same way in Matsushita's factory. I was hoping for clairification from a knowledgeable person. There are a few on here. There is no "hand building" for the Digilux 3 different from the L1. However, the quality inspection at the home distributor may be different. So, does anyone have first-hand knowledge of this?

"Much ado about nothing"

You can get 2 L1's for the cost of 1 Digilux

So what is someone touches the camera? What is the IQ of the camera and assembler then?
If all the difference is a humans touch thenmaybe the Leica should cost more.
Makes sense to me. Someone has to glue the red dot on... LOL
