Pentax Sensor Rumors???

So it's highly possible then? Wouldn't take much to turn a tractor
into a bulldozer.
No, people seem to be using the same logic to assume that Samsung can just jump into the ring when it's taken the top players many years of experimentation to get there.

Could be Canon! Maybe they don't see Pentax as a threat and would like to sell sensors. Maybe they will trade their sensor use for something Pentax has - like inbody stabilization patents. Japanese companies "work" together in strange ways sometimes. Doesn't Canon still use Sony sensors on their P&S cameras?
thanks

I think what he meant was that Lambourghini already MAKE tractors!

Samsung already make sensors. If they had a plan a few years ago to design and build a sensor it would be about ready to go by now.

Like Porsche they either weren't very good at it or they didn't make money because neither make them now, they know their strengths as does Samsung.

I would be extremely surprised if Samsung could even knock out a decent 4/3 sensor, they are specialists in producing memory and system LSI, I wouldn't go to them or Sony for IGBT-based power assemblies either.

Samsung have already produced several (smaller) CMOS sensors... the latest being: http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Samsung-Launches-84-MP-CMOS-Sensor.htm

So they know how to do it, of course those were all smaller, but still, it's not something totally new to them.

Yes I was well aware of these but scaling up sensors is not a simple matter or they would have done it. They are currently busy designing the World's Smallest CMOS Image Sensors:

They are experts at semiconductor miniaturization.

But Lamborghini makes the (incredible!) engines for most of the boats in the highly exclusive off shore boat racing world series.

I'm sure someone can make a point out of that, I'm not sure which point, though ;-)

A quote from that article (March 28, 2007):

"The CMOS sensor is one of the five new innovations that Samsung plans to focus on as part of its competitive marketing strategy. Samsung also announced other emerging technology today including a fusion semiconductor, flash-based Solid State Drive, a smart phone semiconductor, and a high resolution LCD for mobile phones."

Of course scalling up is not a simpler matter, but maybe they succeeded now and will release a bigger sensor soon...

Btw, your link talks about the same sensor my link does, and the second says: ""The CMOS sensor is one of the five new innovations that Samsung plans to focus on as part of its competitive marketing strategy."

So how long did it take them to go from not making LCD TV panels at all to taking over as the largest producer? You think CCDs are hard?

My money is on pentax continuing to use Sony CCD's, perhaps the same CCD that is in the K10. I would love to see a Fuji CCD in a pentax but its just wishful thinking. Instead, I can see pentax adding a second processor to improve the continuous drive mode from 3fps to 5+fps along with a few other improvements.

But I hope I'm wrong about the CCD!

The processor in K10D is specified to handle 5fps at 10 MPix. What they need to change is the mechanics.

BTW do you know which company produces most CMOS sensors these days? ST Microelectronics. And there are other independent manufacturing and designing companies with low publicity, but high production volume and design experience. Surprise may strike from anywhere.

Doesn't Sharp also make sensors?
thanks

Yes they do. They are not producing large format sensors however. Tere are quite a few of third party manufacturers coming out of the woodwork, with some interesting technologies up their sleeves.

Samsung semiconductor has three major business units - memory, logic and TFT-LCD, that is their focus.

Obviously not, lovely motor Gov. ;-)

LCD has been one of their three major semiconductor business focus for some time. Jan 2001: SAMSUNG Electronics ranked the world's first in TFT-LCD production for third consecutive year.

There is some unofficial information that Pentax can use also not Sony sensor

I'm more concerned about Pentax incorporating electronics and designing whole imaging pipeline without screw-ups like VPN no matter what sensor. So far it seems that Pentax is still more of the optical and mechanical company (which's a good thing) and less of an electronics company. Later is required nowadays to expertly produce competitive digital photo tools.
