To have a scratch disk for Nikon NX and PSCS3 on a separate hard drive?
What with core 2 and SATA hard drives.....

I am looking at a new Dell and there seems to be no option for the second hard drive.

Well, it wasn't necessary before either - just recommended to get better performance.

I wouldn't worry about it, your CS3 will rock with core 2 & the single SATA drive - just make sure you have enough RAM.

Curious ... what Dell doesn't have an option for another hard disc drive? Surely you can add an external one to a USB port?

No option for a 2nd hard drive? You sure? If true, I wouldn't have it if you gave it to me.

I see no option for a second hard drive ......perhaps I should give them a call.....

And I am aware the separate scratch disk was not a necessity but it makes a big difference with NX on this old computer.

And I do not think USB is the way to go for a scatch disk but I do have a couple for storage.
Thanks folks

Don't buy the cheapest model. ;-)

Even if you don't want a second drive intially, you want to make sure you can add one later (power supply can handle it, connections on Motherboard, drive bays available).

Look at the Product Details link and go to specifications. Some models are limited to one hard drive (for example, the little C521). The next model up (E520) supports two hard drives. They have models above those, too.

Check the specs and make sure the system you buy is going to be expandable later should you want/need to add more storage to it. The model you're looking at appears to be a tiny footprint type box, and it would be too limiting from my perspective.

so what do you think would be better - scratch on the main drive or scratch on an external eSATA? I would think that the external SATA would be just as fast as the internal one???

I have been all over that site and I could not find that info.

I guess that means I can not order it that way from Dell, but I can add the other HD later.

I was looking at the best E520 they have listed as there is a 350 dollar coupon for it.
Do you have any more good info?
Thanks
