your favorite non-nikkor-brand 2.8 zooms?

I recently bought the Tamron 17-50/2.8 and really like it. Sharp from f/2.8! It performs very well on my D50 (6mp) and D200 (10mp).

I second that, I have the 50-150 and I love the lens. I miss the 50 - 70 portion when I use the 70-200 more than I miss the 150-200 portion when I use the 50-150, especially indoors.

Love my Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. Doesn't hurt that I got it for $260 delivered and included:
  • Nikon N80 film SLR body, like new (SWEET!)
  • 82mm UV filter
  • 82mm CPL filter
The Sigma lens hood is WAY too shallow. I replaced mine w/ a collapsible rubber one that extends out in two portions for three different 'depths'. Works great and protects the front element when carrying & shooting too!

This Sigma 24-70 stays on my camera most of the time, unless I'm shooting interior architecture, then it is undoubtedly my Tokina 12-24 on my D80, or Nikon 24mm f/2.8 on my N80. If I dint have the Tokina 12-24, I'd opt for a Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 for its versatile wide range.

Still, love having 70mm reach. I usually forget I have a Nikon 24-120 ED-IF AF-S VR, since I got the Sigma. Seriously. I'll take the IQ over zoom range any day. And the bokeh! Did I mention the soft bokeh?!

Cheers.

From a shoot last weekend, nighttime 52mm @ f/6.3:

Shot in April about 40 mins before sunset, pretty soft bokeh for such high-contrast background:

This is a "Lomo" effect from one of my first shots w/ this lens when I got it:

That's the only 3rd party f/2.8 zoom I have experience with, and it's great :)

From what I heard, Sigma 18-50 macro, Sigma 50-150 HSM, Sigma 70-200 HSM, and Sigma 120-300 HSM are also excellent.

Cheers

I just received the Sigma 18-50mmm F/2.8 EX and so far I like it a lot. It seems sharp but to be honest, it's so new I haven't really had time to analyze images. I'm going on vacation to Washinton, DC and I plan on using it in low light museums, I'll know more then.

As far as quality, it feels well put together and besides the noisy focus motor,(not overly loud), it should provide years of good service. It feels alot like my Tokina 12-24 in quality of build.

Regards,

Bob

cast my vote for the sigma 200-500/2.8 :P

the sigma 50-150 is supposed to be good, so is the sigma 70-200. tamron is supposed to be good for the 17-50/2.8.

... I guess the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 is by default mine since it's the only f/2.8 zoom I own. :-p For the shorter focal lengths, I prefer to just go w/ primes instead although I did also recently add the 180 f/2.8, which combined w/ my old 85 f/1.8 might very well leave the Sigma telezoom unused (and perhaps ready for eBay).

I guess if I were to get a f/2.8 wide zoom, I might go for either Tamron 17-50 or 28-75. Tamron seems to be better than Sigma for the wider f/2.8 zooms.

Inexpensive is a relative term, my vote is for the 120-300 HSM 2.8 Sigma, loved that lens but really needed a longer lens and made the mistake of selling it ($2100) more than likely will be re buying it the next time I find a nice sample for sale used (or dealer demo)

It is smaller than the Nikkor 300 2.8 and on a digtal body 300 can be a bit long from time to time so the zoom is just fantastic, I do however wish Nikon made a VR verison.....

Hmmm. I dint realize the 105 was a zoom. But then, I also dint realize some peeps can consider a 120-300 f/2.8 'inexpensive'... Just a matter or 'scale' I suppose... Hey Raymond... could you lend me 'a few bucks?' Just funnin.' I don't mean to start anything, really. And you did start by acknowledging it is 'relative.'

Cheers.

You are right, I missed the word zoom, but it is still a very sharp non Nikon lens in my collection.
