FTP uploading software . . . what is good?

I've been using Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard to upload my photos to my webspace for years, but it seems that it no longer works with any of the new operating systems.

Any ideas for what would be a good software to replace Microshaft's Web Publishing Wizard (and preferably something just easy to use).

Remember . . . always keep the box and everything that came in it!

I'm happy user of FileZilla:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla
Freeware.

I often use SmartFTP (freeware).

Thanks . . . I will try them!

I downloaded Smart FTP a couple of months back, but I just couldn't get it to work.

That is what I liked about the Web Publishing Wizard . . .

Once you had your address keyed in, all you had to do was choose the file and click the mouse . . . and it was uploaded!

Which one of these are easy like that (Smart FTP isn't).

I always thought SmartFTP was the easiest. It has a Windows Explorer look. If you check the HELP it has videos to show how to set it up.

My first recommendation is always FileZilla (free), but if you want something with a more simple user interface, then the latest WinSCP 4.x (also free), which is a great and simple SFTP (Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol - which Filezilla also supports) client has added FTP and FTPS (FTP via SSL, aka Secure FTP - which FileZilla also supports) support. You can use it with an explorer-style interface, or a really simple 2-pane interface, which is what I use.

WinSCP: http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

I used to use WSFTP LE for a long time, many years ago, then many sites started switching to Secure FTP (FTP with SSL), and I had to access some sites via Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol. WSFTP LE doesn't support either of these, but FileZilla does, and so does the latest WinSCP, both of which are free and very good.

Ah, never ran into that problem before.

If all you have to do is plain (non-secure) FTP, and don't yet have a dedicated FTP client, and you want an Explorer look, then just use Explorer (can't get much more Explorer look than that), since it directly supports FTP. Though I prefer to use a real FTP client, like FileZilla. Since you've already paid for SmartFTP, that is fine too, but no need to pay for an FTP client when there are excellent free clients available.

If you're just downloading from public FTP file sites, then there wouldn't be any reason to use a secure FTP connection, since the files are freely available to everyone anyway, so there's no reason to secure the connection. Also, if you're just uploading to a personal web site, which everyone can access anyway, there's also no need for a secure connection.

Though, if you are uploading or downloading sensitive information, then you need to secure that connection or data somehow, either by using something like plain FTP over a secure connection, like a VPN connection, using a secure transfer protocol, like FTP with SSL or Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol, or by putting the data into a secure package, like PGP. Or you could do everything, transferring a PGP encrypted file via FTP with SSL via VPN, for triple security. Doing at least 2 of the 3 is not uncommon in the business world, like transferring PGP encrypted files via FTP with SSL or via VPN, that way both your connection and your package are secure.

I don't think FileZilla is free anymore . . .

Keeps taking me to a window where it wants me to choose which option to pay for.

Just thought I'd mention . . .

I don't mind paying for software, but I would like to try it before I buy it!

I can't tell you how many times over the years I bought software only to find that it didn't do what I wanted or just wasn't as user friendly as advertised!
