close-up digital photography

I am looking for a good digital camera for close-up photography. I am a dentist and i take many pictures of teeth. What is a good camera that can represent nuances in hue, chroma, and value as well as a slide could. Is there a digital camera available for this purpose? I use a ring flash for these photos. Can i use my nikon ring flash with the digital camera? Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

If your ring flash has a TTL connection, it would plug right in to the Nikon CP 990, 995. Either are great at macro, without aux lenses. Both are 3.34 Mp, enough for 8x10's or better. The 995's are dropping in price, a very good buy. 990's are hard to find, many factory re-conditioned ones, though.

I am not sure that any digital currently on the market is capable of the level of subtlety that you are after, but you probably won't know for sure unless you try one. Check out the reports here and look at the samples.

Ramin,

Your best bet would be a digital SLR with a good true macro lens. Since you own a Nikon flash, either the Nikons and the Fuji SLRs would do. Of course, these have the price problem, not to speak of the price of the lens.

Most digicam 'macro' lenses are close-up lenses, and as such almost always exhibit some distortion. Some digicams are much better than others at macro, so you probably should check the reviews before you decide. The fact that you're using a Nikon flash does restrict the search...

Using a ring flash and custom white balance, you souldn't have a problem with color consistency.
