Baseball game...

during the local broadcast on NESN, the Sox broadcasters called very specific attention to the Dodgers feat... while also making tha point of the timing of the game with the Dodgers being more 'dramatic' (9th inning comeback to tie). One thing that did differ was the Sox doing it all off the same pitcher (Dodgers were 2 + 2), which makes it a little more 'odd'... since most night a pitcher might be yanked before having a chance at coughing up 4 in a row.

Some other interesting tidbits were that the Dodger game was ultimately won on another homer in the 10th, by former-BoSox Nomar.... and, JD Drew hit home runs in both the Dodger and Red Sox homer-paloozas. Being involved once is obviously rare... twice, though?!? May never ever again happen!

I'm not sure how this all played in the rest of the nation, but I recall almost every reference to the Sox feat being cast against the rarity of the event with mentions of the few other times in history and specifically calling attention to the Dodger game (most recent + JD Drew is a common denominator)... on NESN, Fox News, ESPN, and a few other TV and Print media I viewed/read about the 4 homer night, that evening and the day following.

The policy at Fenway park is both simple and ambiguous:

"Cameras and video cameras are permitted but cannot be used to reproduce the game and must not interfere with other fans' enjoyment of the game"

However, my experiences there suggest a fairly common sense application of the policy. Try dragging in a monopod and a 600mm lens and you're not going to get far without press credentials and a box to sit in. The key factor is "must not interfere with other fans' enjoyment of the game". Non-intrusive on other's personal space, non-obstructive of their view, etc. Keep in mind, Fenway was built in the early 1900's when Americans weren't as large (or as tall), on average and the seating reflects this fact.

Most people I've seen in stands stick to 70-200 (w/TC), or equivalent sized lenses... speaking in terms of PHYSICAL dimension, not focal length. Pack neatly in a bag that's personal-sized (don't bring a big case, large pack, etc.). And, locate and print Fenway's policy in case you run into an un-informed park worker who might wrongly object to the type of camera/lense combo you're brining in (not likely... but never hurts to have their own policy within reach in case of dispute!).

Personally, that's the size I'd stick to, as well... nothing larger than the size of Canon's 70-200/2.8, for example... unless, if my tickets were for a 'front row' (concourse in front of you, field in front of you, edge of balcony/box), ONLY THEN I would consider something even a bit longer, being able to then make a well-reasoned case that my big(ger) lens would be in any position to interfere with another fan's enjoyment of the game (nobody sitting in front of me that might object to my lens hanging over their head, next to their ear, etc.).

Thankfully, Fenway has had the good sense to NOT adopt those ridiculous policies against "professional (looking)" camera/lenses.... which ultimately restricts someone with a Canon 20D + 17-40/4L, while at the same time allowing a 12x optical zoom Advanced P&S. huh?!?!

Enjoy the game (and the photo ops!),

I've been going there since I was kid -- when bleacher seats were just $0.50.

I have no problem bringing in a 100-400mm "big white lens."

When I ask which Canon lenses are best,
people tell me to 'go to L.'

Well, I'm finally going to the game this Thursday, bringing 2 lenses the Canon 17-40L and the 70-200 2.8L (w/ 1.4 TC). Hopefully I'll have some pics to post for anyone interested. I just hope the weather holds out, I saw a forecast for scattered t-storms tue/wed, but partly cloudy on thursday. Keeping my fingers crossed on that!

...you can always stitch together a multi-shot pano:

I climbed up to the uper deck behind home plate and shot this with my 20D and Tokina 19-35 @ 19mm. I believe it was 6 shots which I stitched together.

Notice the two guys in the white shirts and white hats in the lower left? That's actually the same guy that moved. He's in two different spots in two different shots.

I think....Therefore I am.

Great job with the stitching...that's funny that the same guy is in it twice, looks like twins! I'll have to give it a shot. I'm guessing you did this without the benefit of a tripod??

...I didn't use a tripod. I try to overlap my frames by about 1/3 of the frame. I use a program called panorama maker that was included in the ArcSoft bundle that came with my first digicam (Pentax Optio 330).

i tried that at busch stadium from the bleachers; the panorama came out far less than impressive. in fact, it looked pretty bad! i guess i am jsut too used to the G2 being able to show the overlap while you frame a panorama!
