Hi

I've just got my Canon WFT-E1 and I'm trying to set it up with my 5D. I can seemingly get all teh settings correct in the WFT-E1 utility (what does this actually do) but when I go through and add the settings to the 5D I get an error saying that it can't connect to the ftp.

Its the FTP function is OSX that I don't fully understand :D I went through 'network' and picked what seemed to be the IP address and added that and my username/password, the utility didn't seem to have a problem with this yet the camera can't see to connect.

Where SHOULD I get the IP address from to use?
Do I need to do anything special to get the WFT-E1 to connect to the FTP?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for getting this working, google hasn't yielded much.

Thanks

Well, we would first need to know how you connect... Is the OS X machine already using the airport antenna to connect to the Internet? In this case you would have to connect through the WLAN router (means the Gateway would be the routers IP address, the FTP server would be the Mac's IP address and the subnet mask should be the same on all devices, normally 255.255.255.0 unless you have changed that). You will still have to enable "FTP Access" under "System Preferences"-"Sharing".

HTH,
Uwe

thanks for the response Uwe.

I'm trying to get this set-up on my macbook that is connected to an airport extreme access point.

I've got the IP address by clicking on:

network > 'show' AirPort > IP address: 192. etc

It also lists the subnet mask and the router IP address but I haven't entered these anywhere.

The only IP address i've added in both the set-up utility and in the camera is the IP address listed here.

I have enabled FTP access in the system preferences and it lists as ftp://xxxxxxx.home address which I have tried and that didn't work. :)

Ok, from memory - I do not have the utility on my laptop right now:

make sure you use at least version 2 of the WFT-E1 Utility (download the last version from the Canon support site if not).

on the "Wireless Lan Settings" tab
  • enter the exact name of the WLAN
  • enter the exact values for authentication and encryption settings as specified for the base station
  • connection method is normally "infrastrusture"
on the "FTP Settings" tab
  • enter the IP address (not the name!) of the OS X computer (you can find this under Applications/Utilities/Netywork Utility - check the IP data for the wireless interface, normally listed as "en1")
  • enter valid user name and password information - you cannot connect to OS X as anonymous
on the TCP/IP tab
  • enable "Use DHCP" IF you have the base station configured to provide DHCP services, all other settings are obsolete
IF NOT:
  • The Gateway is the IP Address of the router (you can see it in the network configuration of the Airport Administration tool)
  • The subnet mask is the same for all devices on the network (normally 255.255.255.0)
  • no need to specify DNS
  • IP Address is the address the camera should use on the network - it must be unique and fit into the IP range specified by the subnet mask - e.g. if the router is 192.168.0.1 and your laptop is 192.168.0.2 and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 then you could use everything from 192.168.0.3 thru 192.168.0.254 (as .255 is reserved)
Once you have done all settings correctly you have to save the configuration file to a CF card and put it into the camera - the WFT-E1 can then load and apply the configuration.

HTH,
Uwe

Based on your original post, you have setup the wireless part and the TCP/IP part correctly. This is because the WFT-E1 will only give you FTP related errors if these setting are correct. My next assumption is that you initially had not set FTP Access on. Uwe already pointed you in that direction.

One addition might help: the user name and password for FTP access are the same as those you logon with onto your Mac.

Second addition: the WFT-E1 will write in the root of your home folder. If you want it to write in Pictures/WFT you will have to set Pictures/WFT in FTP settings, Target folder in WFT Utility v2.0.
Good luck.
