Question to the Australian owners of 707.

I am trying to fill the bag with a few accessories (extra battery, external charger, remote, tripod, telephoto lens).

Having dificulty with local stores in there not being too much floor stock to actually see and prices not being competitive.

Can anyone recommend a store (real preferably, or at a pinch, online) in brisbane or particularly melbourne (will be going there in 2 weeks) that may be worth a look. (Will only have about 1/2 a day in melbourne to shop.)--Andrew

Ain't that the truth. I'm buying all my acc's O/S, since I'm lucky enough to have people at my work travelling somewhere in the world 6 months of the year, just so happens that we have someone in HK right now, picking up a HVL-F1000 flash for me while they are there, I'll be going for the other acc's you mentioned at another time.

Andrew,

I got my F707 stuff from Singapore. Apart from the low stock and high price in Australia generally, I suppose the couple of camera shops in Swanston St. Melbourne city will be worth a look. But only for 'general camera accessories' and extra batteries and memory sticks and memory stick accessories like readers etc. (i.e. if you're willing to pay higher Aussie prices).

If you want 707 equipment, you'll be better off in HK or Singapore. Also note the lower memory stick prices announced by Sony a few weeks back. I'm not sure if the news has hit Australia yet.

My 128meg MStick came from Singapore @ $170AUD last week, I saw the same size at **** Smith Electronics for well over $300. Looks like the news on price drops in Oz is communicated by way of a tin can at either side of the globe joined with string.lol
Good luck

It difficult reading the almost daily "Sears pricematching" stories for prices as low as 499USD. I ended up getting my 707 locally out of pure luck. The store i purchased from had some due 4 days after my initial enquiry. I tried another 12+ stores and they all told me 4-6 weeks minimum to get one in and i would have to give a 10-20% nonrefundable deposit. Even the store i bought from wanted a deposit so that they would call me first when it came in. And this was the first time i had actually seen the camera.

I told the salesdroid about the 128K memory stick at $50USD.....he just laughed.

I might have to do a deal with the friends i have in the US and cross my fingers with regards to australia customs.

Highly recommend to buy overseas. Not only the GST difference, parallel imports have pushed the price even lower. I bought a 128MB MS (parallel import) for HK$570 last month compared to Sony Proshop price of HK$750. Well, paralle imports are not always the cheapest. Sony Proshop in Hong Kong sells BC-VM50 (made in China) at HK$400 compared to over HK$600 of the parallel import VM50 (made in Japan).

So does anyone know any good online overseas sites that you buy from???

Or do you just get people to get them while they are over there???

If there was a reliable online store I would purchase from them...

I picked up my 707 last week at Michaels Cameras (corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale St) and I think they had some of the accessories. If not, definitely try Camera House (Elizabeth St as well) they do not have the camera but definitely have batteries and if all else fails the Sony store in Swanston St (near the corner of Lonsdale St).

Happy shopping

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have a small computer shop near the sunshine coast, the price for memory sticks hasn't come down at all at this stage.

My supplier dosn't list accessories for the 707 in their pricelist, maybe could get them on a special order, how many months on order I don't know, my 707 was ordered for a couple of months I got it just before Christmas.
(and it's a great camera)

For your info here are the current cost prices inc GST

707 $2375.00
128Mb $ 274.00
USM Ms reader $63.00 (not Sony)
NP-FM50 $115.50

Hope this info helps someone get a bargain.

Kerry.

And there's the other problem.

If the big stores don't get you with the price, they do it with availability of stock.

Shame i didn't find your shop when i was looking. Prices are about what i paid, but i prefer to buy from smaller place - better service, and they don't usually take the sale for granted.

Where's your shop Kerry , might have to give it a visit.

Any chance that you would care to disclose what you paid for it, plus the first 4 characters of the serial number, and date of manufacture ?

I hope to buy mine from the same store(s) in the next month or two, so any info would be greatfullly received.--Guy

The Singapore prices are:
707 $1790
128mb $185
NP-FM50 $99

Saving: $690.50

This is about the same amount for a return air ticket during off peak season.
Thats how I got mine... And plus you get the latest blue dot 707.

I presume these are the Singapore prices in AU$

Could you provide the name of the store in Singapore where you got yours from - I may be able to entice a friend who will be doing a stopover there, to buy one for me.

Any info greatfully received.

Would rather not disclose exact price & serial num etc, however the price was in between the cost price (as listed by Kerry earlier) and the retail of $2800 - they seem willing to move on price if you get a MS or some other accessory at the same time

Couldn't find a date of manufacture. Dating of shipping was 25.2.2002 Serial num is nothing like the ones in the US which have experienced the probs.

I have checked for BFS and dark left side etc etc - no evidence of either however I suspect a bit of LEVBFS at VERY low exposure when in manual mode (personally it does not concern me) - all the other benefits of the camera make up for this one possible issue. This is my first digital and I am impressed.

I mentioned the few possible problems to the Sony store rep (who was well aware of this forum) in January when I started looking into the 707 and he assured me that none of the affected cameras had been released in Oz. I do however have the strange little black square on the box!, which I suspect is why Michaels have only very recently received stock (there were none around in Jan unless you joined the waiting list at Sony)

happy snapping

These are in Singapore dollars. Not much difference. I got the items from shopping at a number of stores. They're mostly located in Orchard Road. Went to 3 stores at least.
