T100 Bad indoor / low light shots

I've just upgraded to the T100 from my Canon Ixus 40 (4mp).

So far I've been very unhappy with indoor and low light shots.

On Auto it seems to switch to High ISO shooting for almost everything and results in photos that even my 2mp camera phone could beat.

Does anyone know any settings I can change to stop it doing this?

I hope there is some solution otherwise I'm going to have to send it back ;-(

With or without flash?

With flash, it should default to ISO400, however, if you are zooming in or shooting something across the room, it will tend to go up on the ISO(a few cameras do this), to compensate for the flash being so far away from the subject. The only real way to stop it is to put it in Program mode and specify the ISO you want to use.

Both!

It's a big dissapointment that this £300+ camera takes worse pictures than the one it is replacing (Canon Ixus 40) which is over 2 years old now.

None of the reviews I read prior to purchase mentioned this and were giving it very high scores...

BUT now people have had it a bit longer, the list of compaints is growing!

Doh, shame I bought a grey import from Ebay ;-( so probably wont be able to get a refund.

If you have to stick to the Auto mode, try lowering the EV to -1.3 or lower... It will pick a lower iso more often.

If you are ok with using P, I use ISO200, Flash+...

Yes, it is too bad they didn't allow you to cap ISO.

Best to take it off of Auto. The basics are really pretty straight forward. This might help...

If you switch it to ISO200, it improves the shot, but still leaves the image way behind that of the Nikon P series and the Panasonic FX series, both of which do a far better job for about half the price.

Very disappointing effort from Sony.

I thought I was buying a P&S camera !

The point is that it does not take good photos on Auto for indoor shots (Even with a lot of light)

The T100 example above was at ISO 400 and is clearly a worse picture that the Ixus 40 (No ISO level detail shown)

I've tried setting the EV level to -1.3 and that did not make any difference - Still shot at well lit room at ISO400 with the resulting poor quality picture.

This is an identified problem of t-100. I initiated a thread regarding this problem which resulted ia detailed discussion please go through the thread below . At the the end of the thread R2D2 has given out the flash distances for various ISO settings. You have essentially two options, either keep the camera on AUTO and remain within the effective distance for the given tele/ wide setting and let the camera decide. Mostly you will endup with prescribed ISO. Alternalely go to the P mode, fix the ISO you wan to use and endup with over/ under exposed shots (mostly under exposed). This will force you to remain within the effective distance of the flash (which is not much). Go through the thread below and get back, we can share tips. I had also decide to return but am still keeping it:

T-100 Problems, Low Light and Flash On - Very High

Hey thanks,

I guess I missed your post as I searched for T100 not T-100 !

I think I have decided to return it anyway as the Mpeg movies are much worse than my existing Camera the 2 year old Ixus 40 ;-(

I actually thought the movies looked pretty good, but none the less, I can't get over the indoor issues. The flash is just too weak, for anything, not close to the camera(this is especially bad when zooming). I hate the fact that to compensate for the flash, it ups the ISO on the pic. This is a P&S camera and you should be able to get a good shot by just pointing and shooting. Outdoors, I will agree, it does a nice job, but the indoor shots(especially people) have just are too unpredictable results.

I'm gonna be returning mine.

Yup , I've just spent ALLl day taking outdoor (100+) shots and they are all very nice.

Macro mode very nice too.

Movie mode SUCKS except for the ability of IS and Zoom.

Overall quality of the mpeg is very dissapointing (compared to my Ixus 40.

Sorry Sony, I thought I made a good decision this time but I sould have stuck with my roots..

1. I just got my T-100 yesterday and my very first initial impression after taking some shots (indoor, at night, with flash) were--> "man, these flash shots are lame" (compared to my F-828, V3, R1 etc... etc...). Point being, I do agree with the numerous posts that the flash aspect of the T-100 is problematic.

2. However, after a full day of shooting outdoors and indoors and after really getting a better feel of this camera, decent flash shots can be achieved... but it appears to take some tinkering. In my case--> definitely need to shoot in Program (I think that's what it's called), then modify the variables a) ISO b) Flash strength.

3. I was also thinking about returning it today, but every camera has it's pros / cons--> hopefully I'll be able to utilize it's strengths more than the negatives.
