Backup App for Mac? Auto Backup on Change?

I have a wonderful backup program called Fileback-PC. It's only for PC's. Whenever a file changes, the program will detect the change and backup the file.

I am looking for something similar for the MAC, because I want my images to be backed up automatically after I change them. A backup program that can be set to run backups every 5 mins or so would be acceptable as well.

If you want to back files up every few minutes you should really be looking at a mirrored RAID. Software backup every five minutes is not a sensible solution.

If you are planning to do a more 'normal' backup routine (whole computer gets backed up every evening) then I can recommend SuperDuper and/or ChronoSync.

I second 'SuperDuper'. After much reading and advice here I am now a big fan. I mainly use the 'smart' feature to create a bootable clone of my h/d and every backup just looks for added data since the last one. One can specify times this is initiated but when I do a backup to an external FW drive, it is offline anyway. Doesn't get simpler than that.

Another good one besides SuperDuper is Synchronize X Pro
  • bootable backups
  • auto-run at desired intervals
It might be more expensive though....

After trying several on a PC and settling on the Western Digital version and then trying several on a Mac I settled on Super Duper based on advice in this forum. I'm very satisfied with it.

I've heard raves about this software and I downloaded it. Maybe I'm missing someting but it seems to be a cloning software - will copy the entire drive.

If I want to just backup my pictures directory and do so frequently (daily or even instantly on change) - this program doesn't seem to do so. Am I missing something?

In SuperDuper, select the "options" button. Then use the drop down menu under what the program should do when run. You will find several options there that do pretty much what you want, although you can't select just a specific folder or app.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

Have a look at iMsafe, here : http://homepage.mac.com/sweetcocoa/imsafe/

It's been in public beta for a couple of years, and is free until September of this year. I've been using it since its inception, and have found it stable and flexible. You can specify single files, or have the app' backup an entire folder, disk, or multiples items and disks, operating only on those files which have changed since the previous backup. You can schedule the times of operation, too.

The software is likely to be reasonably-priced when the final version is delivered. I use my copy to make sense of backups to five internal disks, including a raid 1 configuration, plus another six externals. The potential for confusion is huge, but with a little planning and iMsafe, I've kept track of everything.

Hi Shiner,

Sounds interesting, but can you really specify other disks? On its home page it reads:

What can iMsafe do for you?

iMsafe backs up data stored in your Home folder (or your Home folder itself) to any mounted OS X volume.

Seems like you can only backup from your home folder??

I want to backup files stored on an external drive (my 500GB Maxtor stored with images) to a network share (windows PC).

Hi Ian,

I'd like to have an application that detects change and then only backups the changed file(s). That's really what I want, because then I don't have to invest in additional hardware.

Use SuperDuper! for now to perform full disk backups - and then
supplement this with Time Machine when Leopard is released
(probably October)
I think Time Machine is just what I need, because it detects changed files. So for now I guess I will just share my images drive on the network and then use my fileback PC application to backup files to my windows machine.

Thank you all!

BOTH the applications that I mentioned will do that, that's why I mentioned them in the first place...

I use Déja Vu to run daily backups. Problem with frequent/instantaneous backups is that if you accidentally delete something, it gets deleted from the backup before you have a chance to catch the mistake and restore the file from the backup. Déja Vu lets you specify folders for backup, backs up daily, weekly, or monthly, and even, optionally, saves multiple iterations (if you have the space).
