Do I need Vista?

My Microtek scanner for example still has no driver. No driver for Nomad Jukebox still.

In case of quark upgrades, good luck!

That's one of the reasons alot of people are using indesign now,
apart from being better.
I use both. I work in prepress. So, I have to support everything. Hell, we still get Framemaker and Pagemaker docs. Why the Pagemaker folks don't upgrade to Indesign is a mystery..

You wouldn't believe the crazy stuff people send in. I've had documents come in set up entirely in Freehand. Or I get Indesign with Microsoft Word and pdfs embedded throughout. People will just throw all sorts of stuff into a mixing bowl and we have to make it print exactly the way they intended. Actually.. I guess that kind of stuff is what makes the work interesting :)

Quark upgrades can be a real pain. We need to run 6.5 and 7 because of sporadic reflow and tabbing issues when saving up from 6.5 to 7. Well everytime I had to reimage a Mac, I then had to call Quark and deal with some Indian customer service guy to let me add 7 to the same machine.

We got tired of that and set up a license server, so now I just type in an IP address and I am done.

Somehow i am not surprised. I know people who had to wait for a dongle for over a year. How customer friendly would you call that.

I know, but it isn't as bad as the 64 bit version!

Driver support is for the hardware vendors and not a fault of microsoft. Most companies don't have their act together.

I worked with an older version too for a while. gess what alot of bugs and faults still in that version where, and no updates whatsoever.

Indesign is a dream compared to quark.

Reinstalled Vista today.

I am holding my breath. I can print now. Excel and Word are working. C&C is installled, my boy is happy abou this. Bibble and CS2 is installed. CS2 is still asking me to register the software, even though I have done this 4 times after installing it. All the patches went it good.

Please, I beg you Vista, don't mess up again.

You need Vista like you need a hole in your head!

I run the x64 version on my computer at work and at home and other than being prettier the only thing I get from it is compatibility issues and slower programs.

I don't hate Vista but it's not something you need unless the application you want to run requires it.

Just switched to a Mac Pro, I feel that I won't be looking back.

Gaming would be the only reason not to go the Mac route IMHO.

This being said, don't forget to consider carefully your live storage solution and the impact it will have on performance. Investing a lot in a high spec machine, but access your work data on a NAS does IMHO not make much sense nowadays.

Cheers,
Bernard

Not sure how much you're planning to spend, but if you're looking at a high end system, don't forget to at least look at the Macs and see what your options are there. I've been a PC guy for forever, but I bought a Mac Pro last winter. I got it for less than I could have purchased a similarly configured Dell. I'm still mostly running WinXP on it through BootCamp and soon will be switching to Parallels, and eventually will make the transition to the Mac. Great pc though.

Just my 2 cents

Actually, there IS no mac anymore, they are all INTEL chips, like any other pc. For pc, you'll have INTEL or AMD. So, it's just another pc clone, you can choose between vista/xp/linux/unix/osx

I just built a killer desktop with all the power and goodies. Great system but, the driver support and misc. annoyances totally over-ride any benefit vista might offer. I just ordered a new copy of XP. Vista was a waste of $150.

taking this a step further in explanation. The misc. annoyances has to do with vista security. Everytime I start a program or attempt to install a program I get numerous pop-up windows from vista asking me if it is ok to use this program/run application. This even occurs when booting the machine with applications loaded in startup.

THERE IS NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF!

I've tried everything with to no avail.

vista home-deluxe (or something like that) is what I bought.

I'm starting to feel like I'm beating a dead horse...........

but, I can't begin to fully express my level of frustration with vista.

In vista 64 there is no support of thumbnailed .nef files. Plain and simply SOL at this point in time. For me this was the final straw and I ordered xp pro shortly after spending 4-5 hours trying to get .nef file thumbnails.

Does OSX have a RAM limitation per process? Can capture or photoshop utilize 12 GB of RAM in OSX for example if you want to load a ton of photos at once or work on an absolutely huge stitched panorama with no disk swapping?

...it would be premature to conclude that Vista's a pile of toss. Having said that, things this bad seldom get better. I'm thinking about reformatting and loading XP.

Frankly, I'm a Mac and PC user and my initial reaction is one of disappointment with Vista. I had hoped it would outperform or compete with Mac OS X. It doesn't.

Brent

I have been dedicated PC user for years, but am fed up with the constant hassles of trying to keep everything running, keep it from bogging down, etc. Was ready to look at new high end laptop, but then started thinking about MACs, went and looked, WOW. Runs CS3 natively, very fast, and from all my friends who have macs and converted, they've never looked back! I am getting the new MACbook PRO next week. At my Apple store, they have a program which for $99 gets you 52 HOURS of one on one training, and they have 3 people who are super photogrpahy/video experts to teach everything from basic mac function to Aperture to CS3. Where's that kind of service from ANY PC vendor? They've sold me!
