Is the F828 still a great camera even in 2007?

...Goes to show that if people are willing to take
their cameras off of "auto" and learn the curve, excellent images
are possible from non-DSLR models - even "old" ones. :-)
I would say "especially" old ones. The 828 was a camera that has no current counterpart. For proof, go find the number of cameras that have a big 2/3" sensor in 2007. Then, be aware that earlier camera that had 7 MP and 5 MP versions of the 2/3" sensor had even BETTER IQ! I rest my case...

I thought the pictures were not very good (understatement) when it first came out but later versions produced some excellent results. I hope the same thing happens with the H9.
Hi,
I am in the process of obtaining of choosing a new camera to
replace my aging F707.

I have tried the lastest sony camera's and they just dont feel like
a good replacement compared to the F828.

I have tried the H9 and really dont like the feel of it.

My question is in this day and age would you consider the F828
still a great camera?

I have managed to track down a F828 which i might purchase if i get
the right advise.

Thanks
Alisdair

...by any standard.

Even at 200mm, it's still fast, at f2.8, so higher ISOs won't be accessed as often as with a slower lens. And you wouldn't want to either, as the noise is pretty harsh beyond ISO 200.

There may never be another digicam made as solid as the F828 (and the Oly 8080), so grab one if you like the feel and durability of a well made camera.

In short :

Unless you are interested in something specific (like a long zoom for example)

Check my site for some info :

My Gallery for some samples : http://madcat.negimaki.com

and a .vs R1 comparision :

I dissagree with these who say the 7x7 IQ is better. It is not.

sorry for short post, i will answer any specific questions....

1. Battery clip. Some 828s had their clip break, either due to the clip being weak or that the supporting spring inside the battery compartment was not compressed enough into the camera. Or both.
2. Manual focus. Some 828s (including mine) don't manually focus at infinity.

3. Exposure dial. Some 828s (including mine) have a tendency to not lock onto the selected exposure setting, jumping around to another setting and staying there - usually momentarily, but still very annoying.

4. Some 828s (including mine) can have a soft edge and or corner to the images produced.

I still love the F828, and I have two of them.

...check for missing screws - they have, on some 828s, a tendency to fall out. A small screwdriver will do the trick.
