Was playing a bit with my camera in a park this afternoon. No comments on the model since she is my wife. This image is provided as is. :)

Taken with the 70-200 mm f/4L IS @ 1/60 sec, 100mm, f/4, ISO 100.

Converted using ACR 4.1. Might have been a bit strong on the conversion sharpening.

If somebody is interested, I can email the RAW file but you need to be able to receive a 11.5 MB file (GMail is able to receive 20MB email). I do not want to setup any kind of account in a sharing site.

Here is a link to the original file:

Very nice shot. And I WILL comment on your wife--she's lovely. As for the picture itself, what I'm really loving about a lot of these posts is the "no post processing" part. If they look that good straight from the camera, it doesn't look like you will need tons of PS work to make them really rock! Thanks for posting--in lou of picking up a 1D3 or a 5D for myself in the near future (I'm still struggling with this), I really enjoy seeing the results some of you post here!

louis,

Great pic and lovely wife. At least you can get your out in front of the camera!!! Mine is too busy behind the camera. ;-)

I'd love a copy of the raw file. You can email it to [email protected]

As to softness, I looked at the original in PBase and I think the posted image looks soft because PBases reduction method sucks. Most of my tack sharp images look soft when you choose PBase's alternate sizes.

For some reason I am seeing horizontal banding on this image. In fact I have seen it on several samples shot that have been posted on this board.

It's subtle, almost like an optical illusion.

I see it sometimes when visiting this board. It's from the text. If you do a lot of reading of posts, you eyes adjust to the levels of the text. After reading the text for a while, if you view a picture, you see banding at the same frequency as the text was. In other words, the banding is in your eyes, not the picture.

Hi,

It's unbelievable how many times you read about softness, banding etc in every camera EVER released... I'm not having a go at anybody and do NOT intend to offend with this post.

Let me assure people that my camera has no banding, it's produces perfectly pin sharp pics right out of the camera, noise is very well controlled and I wouldn't think twice at using this camera at ISO800 (not tried above that yet so I may very well use it at higher levels), all other camera's I've used I've been reluctant to go above ISO200. It is the best camera I've ever used. It really is that good!!

I don't think people are taking into account many factors including down sizing and compression for the web, conditions pic taken under etc... The list can go on but I don't think I'll bore you all with it.

Just get one or try one for yourself. All doubts will disappear in the click of a button! If in doubt try it out!

Best wishes

Louis,

Thanks for the RAW image. I'm now very happy to report that Capture One LE can view and process the MIII large RAW files. I understand, however, that it doesn’t work with the sRAW files.

As to sharpness, the original image is tack sharp. As I suspected PBase's reduction algorithms are terrible which is why the image you posted doesn't look all that sharp.

I applied my normal sharpening settings in C1 then resized to 800px long in PS and applied a bit more Smart Sharpening and as far as I'm concerned the image is fabulous. I can post my results if you don't mind for other to see. Let me know.

You must have not owned a 1D Mark II. Absolutely the softest image producing camera I've ever owned (zero to max sharpening didn't matter). The n addressed the problem after Canon denied it for months/year. Owned two 1D Mark IIs and couldn't get rid of them quick enough. This camera is night and day better.

The DOF is shallow, sure, but that's not the same as soft. Try taking the image and applying a highpass filter to it using a radius of something small, say, 0.2, that would show something only if there is sharp detail. There's plenty of it, particularly in the hair. Looking carefully at this picture, it appears to me the jpeg artifacts are stronger than the finest detail.

A consequence of this is that areas with low contrast, like, the eyebrows, get blurred from the compression but areas like the strands of hair on top of the model's head with specular reflections, code well.
