H9 'beauty' in the eye?...

What I can’t understand is that we are getting such widely different results and opinions about the H9. I’ve seen dozens of excellent H9 photos on this forum – and a good number of poor ones too – and we have at least two professional reviews that clearly don’t like this camera plus a number of very unhappy users as well, and some that are not exactly happy but not totally p-off.

Is ‘beauty’ in the eye of the beholder? Or are there some definitely sub-standard cameras out there? I was earlier interested in the Olympus SP-550 ultra zoom. It had more range and features than the H9 but it too earned a poor review from this site. As well there were happy users and unhappy ones. Again was it a question of poor quality control or something else that apparently affected some cameras but not others?

I settled the issue for myself by trying one out and found it clumsy and erratic in its picture taking. I was hoping for better from the H9. But in view of the negative comments from here and elsewhere I’m not so sure I even want to try one.

The Canon S5 is coming out this month and I’m going to try that first. If it’s a keeper I don’t think I’ll even try the H9. Or should I? The need for a firmware fix seems evident to many users. If Sony doesn't come up with one very soon it won't get my $$ even on a trial basis.

Paul, maybe it's just that some people expect either 'more or less' from their camera?

Or....maybe some of the cameras being shipped out are being handled by clumsy monkeys....

Whatever the reason, it really can be frustrating when a picture doesn't come out like you expect it to. Take my photo. With both the H9 and the H2 it came out looking like Ugly Betty when I know I am a dead ringer for Goldie Hawn. Yes, a young Goldie Hawn....

Photo critics are like egos. Everybody has one.....

This explains everything.

The reason for the disparity is because there are beginners, amateurs, skilled photographers, and pros attempting to communicate on the forums. We need translators.

One person says there is color fringing, the beginner replies with, "what's color fringing?". It's an endless cycle.
