I've been trying to get this guy for weeks. I finally do (not a great shot) and he's not even out in the open. Can anyone brighten up the colors or improve on the lack of light?

Shadow/highlight and cloned out the branch by the beak

If you want you could mask back darker areas to surround bird but prefer the lighter feel.

Best wishes

Another ACR 4.1 attempt using exposure, and temp to get the blue, with the new clarity, sharpening and NR tools... surprised it cleaned up so well. Went into PS and did some selective color to tone the blown out sky.

That's really well done.

Levels, sample gray, black&white on Jay, mask out impact on the rest of photo @ 80%, increase sat. 16% total photo, curves blue channel and sharpen.

I used Curves with a few masks to lighten and saturate the birds blueness. pdriverr

I used Camera Raw to fix the exposure (concentrating on the bird, of course). Then in PS, masked in just the bird and used levels to adjust the background a bit. Best to leave that fairly dark, I think.

Lots of busy leaves and twigs competing with the bird for attention; remove those -- by cloning and cropping -- and the eye will be pulled to the center of interest.
