Filter for 28-70/f2.8L

Hey, I just got one of these lenses, second hand. Had never seen one before. I'm underwhelmed by the build and feel -- at least compared to my 70-200/f4L. How's yours? When the barrel is extended to 28mm, is there some lateral play? How does the zoom ring feel... silky smooth, or slightly reluctant? Does the zoom feel change when you point the lens upward or downward? Mine doesn't look like it's been abused, so I'm hoping it's just the way it is, and that I'll get used to it.
I bought 28-70f2.8 Lens with 77mm Canon Protect Filter. Should I
change it to Hoya HMC or B+W filter. Any recommendations?

Thanks

I've got 70-200f4 too, build quality is better than 28-70. And I bought new 28-70 and zoom feel not so smooth, not very smooth. I think your lens hasn't been abused but it has been use for years.

I agree. I was not impressed with the build quality at all. See my recent query on this forum:

Everyone was "surprised," and according to Mr. Rothman, it is the "one of the beefiest and solid lenses that Canon produces" or something to that effect. Several posts accused me of not knowing the difference between a Canon L lens and a Sigma... Maybe since Lee has so many lenses, he's the one who is confused? In my opinion, it uses very similar plastic body construction and external focusing to the 24-85, just in a larger package. I have the 16-35 and the 70-200 and their all-metal construction is in a different league. I did go ahead and purchase the lens, though, and optically, it seems very good.

I just bought the 28-70L and 70-200 IS this week and bought a couple of filters for it that I think will do the trick. I don't have my new 1D to attach them to so I can't give a report on them just yet but I assume I won't be able to notice they are there, which is kinda the point since I buy them primarily for lens protection.

I bought 77mm B+W MRC (MultiCoat) UV filters in the new F-Pro size (4mm thick vs. 6 or 7mm), so they are about half as thick as the old style B+W filters.

They also have front threads so you can attach a lens cap or another filter on top of it.

$96 each from http://www.2filters.com . They had them in stock and they arrived about four days after I ordered. Shipping was free.

I think I did OK on price since the guy in my local pro shop wanted over $90 for non-multicoated B+W UV filters in the old thick mount.

Maybe I just got a good one. Tight as a drum and built like a brick. NO play anywhere on this one. So much for the consistency I guess.

So, C., we have the same general impression. But, could you address the specific queiries I posed (below), please? That would be very helpful.

How about this, Lee: Today, I taped up newpaper pages and made 12 test frames w/Elan 7e on tripod w/self-timer, with ISO 100 print film. 70mm at f2.8, f5.6, f11... then mid-zoom, 28mm, and 70mm macro at same 3 f-stops.

Overall softer (and softer in corners) at f2.8. Best wide open was at 70mm. Worst was mid-zoom and 70mm macro. At f5.6 the lens was pretty impressive (astonishing at 70mm macro).

I know most lenses are less than tack sharp wide open. Should I be worried about this softness, in a lens of such reputation as the 28-70/f2.0L? Need to make decision on whether to try return to seller.

Thanks

And, of course, I've been planning to do some wide open indoor shots. No point going for an f2.8 lens if you don't intend to shoot a fair amount of f2.8.
