My trip to Greece (Multiple Images to follow)

Great gallery Peter! I always love your strong compositions - the Greek islands are wonderful to photograph. These remind me of a romantic journey there just over decade ago - nice thoughts to bring back. Regards, Brett

The Journey is the Thing

First of all: great pictures, Peter. The Santorini sunrise.. love that one.

End of June I'll be heading back to Greece ( been there five times now) but I'm sure my wife and kids will have to miss me from time to time...

Using -1/3 is a sensible thing in the bright light with these white buildings. But you also used -1/3 with the baptism picture, though the people where under a porch in the shade. Did you have to pump this one up to get the people out of the shade ?

Hi Lock,
First of all: great pictures, Peter. The Santorini sunrise.. love

Thanks! I got the sunrise one thanks to jetlag I guess. For the first several days there I would wake up around 3am - 3:30am every morning (Beijing time is five hours ahead) and then went back to sleep for a few more hours. That day I happened to wake up at around 5:50am with no alarm set. I felt really sleepy but saw that it was sunrise coming and managed to crawl out of the hotel bed and bring the camera out to the outside. This one was shot with the 50-200 from the yard in the hotel. Glad you liked it. :)

Hope you enjoy your time there this six time! End of June could be a very busy season though...

Good catch here. The -0.3EV was a mistake for the baptism scene. I was actually photographing the church in an area overlooking the entrance of it and used the compensation for the building. All of a sudden people came and there were photographers and video camera crew as well (as can be seen in my image), I simply forgot to change the settings and tried to capture the scene as quickly as I could. The people went inside the church moments after this was taken. But surprisingly, I only had to use a +0.1EV in Silkypix for the RAW conversion.

It's not that bad as in July or August. Holiday season in Europe hasn't really started and what you will see is mostly old folks or families with young kids. The party starts in the first week of July.

I will bring the 50-200 and the 17-70 sigma with me, together with casio EX P-600 for an occasional quicky..but I will not be able to use an Epson or something similar cause they are seriously overpriced where I live. The Amerkcan price in dollars equals the euro price, meaning I pay at least 20% too much. Do you know of a good but less expensive alternative, cause lately I've been shoting raw as well and I really like it.

There are some cheaper alternatives for portable storage but none of them has the gorgeous screen AND native RAW support for Pentax cameras as far as I know. I originally wanted to settle for something much cheaper but I didn't feel secure enough by going with one that only has status lights or indicators instead of the ability to view the images. Can't imagine my hard work getting lost if the device itself is not reliable. I got the P-5000 from Japan and it was less than US$550.

Hi Lance,
Great news. The FA*28-70 f2.8 is a wonderful performer and I used
it in conjuction with the DA16-45 when I went to Europe last year.
I never really needed any other lenses as this was a very good zoom
combo for travel. I sometimes used the DA14, but that was all that
was really required.
Are you getting the DA* 16-50 when it comes out? the FA* 28-70, while not as wide, could be a great fast portrait zoom which makes it great for events as well as street photography. The 16-50 is a bit lacking on the long end. But then again we have to wait till some real samples to know if the DA* can truly be a match to the FA* optically.

Hi Peter,

Realy nice shots!

Pentax user is a rare species in Greece indeed, but not totally absent. I am an Athens-based nature photographer, travelling a lot around the country, so next time you will be in Greece send me a PM: just in case I might be nearby your location.

Hi,

Untill recently, Pentax user in Greece was a very rare species of animal indeed. Thanks to the K10D we became more abundant:-)
If I'm not wrong, now Greek members in this forum reached the number of five!

Had I known there are forum members based in Greece I'd have sent out a post before I go, at least we could have coffee together and chat! Next time I go I will let you know. Loved the people and the country and will definitely go back. :)

Hi novosel,
These sets are really good, you've captured some of the feeling of
being there for sure. You should be proud, your photos from the
islands(and the mainland) stand out from the hundreds of pictures
I've seen from there, and that's not an easy thing to accomplish.
Trying to take an original and interesting shot on Santorini might
actually be one of the ultimate tests of one's photographic talent,
if you can do that you can probably do well with any subject,
anywhere, under any conditions, and with any camera.
Many thanks for your compliments. While there are those "essential" scenes that I had to photograph, I hate to see several photographers standing at the same location firing away. So I was trying to explore the places from a bit of a different angle and it's always fun to do so.

Many thanks for your compliments. I totally agree about the Greek islands. For this trip we only visited Mykonos and Santorini and I'd love to see other places in the future: Rhodes, Delos, Crete, etc...

Wow excellent, I looked at all of them...(just to prove it's a good series !)

Some are great, the first with the boat, soldiers (you should number them so we can comment)

Yes, I am getting the DA*16-50 f2.8 as soon as it becomes available and as you say this will be a great match for the FA*28-70 f2.8. I think this is a great combo as there is a good amount of overlap and therefore means less need to swap back to the other lens unless a need arises at the extremes of the zoom range, ie 16-28mm needed when the FA*28-70 is mounted or 50-70mm when the DA*16-50 is mounted. As I stated in my other post, I basically used these zoom ranges whilst on my Germany/Paris trip and really didn't need anything else.

I am very hopeful that the DA*16-50 will be able to match the FA*28-70 optically and there is no reason to think that it can't as Pentax have made other superb zooms like the FA*28-70, FA*80-200 and others. Pentax have stated that the new DA* zooms will be the best zooms by anyone(or something along those lines), so even if they are only as good as the FA* series, then I will be a happy little camper. :-)
